Swedish all-girl Rock band, Thundermother started in the summer 2010 and began to sell out clubs and bars without having a record released. Since then they have released two full length albums and have gained support from (and toured with) big name acts such as Danko Jones, Motorhead, Clutch, Zakk Wylde, In Flames, and various members of Opeth, Airbourne, among others. Thundermother is a group of highly energetic performers who are dedicated to their craft of making Rock music for the world to enjoy, and that is one of the reasons they are this week’s Indie Band of the Week!
Who are you and what is your role in the band?
I am Clare Cunningham and I am the lead singer. In the band with me are members Filippa Nässil, lead guitar; Giorgia Cateri, Rhythm guitar; Tilda Stenqvist, drums; and Linda Ström, bass.
How did the band get started?
Filippa created the band back in 2010. The line up you see today wasn’t always the original set-up. Giorgia moved to Sweden five years ago for her love of metal and rock music and for work and met Filippa randomly at an afterparty and the two got chatting over some beers and Filippa explained her visions and dreams to Giorgia, who was actually planning on selling her guitar the very next day. Intrigued and very interested Giorgia met with Filippa the next day to jam and that was that connection made!! After a few different line up changes Filippa added in good friends Tilda and Linda and I was headhunted on YouTube by a very determined Filippa wanting a singer who could sing AC/DC style!. So after a year and a half of touring over and back from the UK where I was living, I made the move to Sweden last January.
Who are your influences and how do they play a role in your sound?
Individually we all have a wide range of different influences. But as a band it’s mainly ACDC/Mötorhead and classic bands from the 70s. And this is very much heard in the sound we create. We are keeping the 70s rock sound alive.
What has been your most meaningful experience being in this band so far?
Playing Sweden Rock Festival, I would say. It was an aspiration of Thundermother’s since the beginning and the crowd that showed up was phenomenal. It was also the national Day of Sweden so a great vibe was all around.
Favorite memory from a show you’ve played or a place you’ve travelled?
There’s a lot of great places we’ve visited, shows we’ve played and people we’ve met along the way to name just one but being brought round on a private tour of the Rioja factory in Spain was pretty amazing. And getting to taste it at the end was even better. A full lunch was spread out for us. Made us feel really special đŸ™‚
What do you hope to accomplish with your music?
To just keep the classic sound alive and to reach out to music and rock lovers worldwide!
Something about you that no one knows?
People think we are the five crazy ladies they see rocking out on stage but we are quite the opposite off stage. We love our quiet time and personal space and each of us has a separate passion other than music whether it’s fitness, cooking or learning to become fire fighters.
What is next for the band?
To start writing the third album, do a European tour in May and tour the US later in the year, hopefully.
Anything else you want to add?
Thanks for the continued support and to everyone who still believes in Rock N Roll and for keeping our dream alive!
