INDIE BAND OF THE WEEK – STRANGELET

unnamedSTRANGELET is a German band from Heilbronn, Southern Germany who gains inspiration from 80s bands who have paved the way to their style and sound.

They are known for two key things: their DIY approach to music, as they write and produce everything on their own and their explosive stage presence that is remnant of the days when glam metal ruled the world.

Who are you and what is your role in the band?

I am Stefan from South West Germany and I am the singer for STRANGELET. I also write most of the lyrics and do our promotional stuff.

How did the band get started?

It’s a very unspectacular story, I think. We formed in 2009, with Jonas on keyboards and producing; Tobi on guitars and most of the songwriting; Jessica, the powerful girl on drums; and Finn the bass-monster and beer-killer and me.

Where did the name originate?

Um it is also very simple. Jonas and Tobi have heard it in physics lessons [laughs] In my opinion it sounds good, it looks good.

Who are your influences and how do they play a role in your sound?

I am listening to all kinds of music at home or on my iPod, from the Beatles to early Prog, from Black Sabbath to heavy Blues Rock, from Motorpsycho to Stoner, from Death to extreme Metal, from Mozart to modern hard rock. No limitations. I like music in many colors and shapes! The others listen to Hard Rock, Metal, Pop, Pagan Metal, or Classic Rock. Everyone in the band prefers different bands and sounds. Maybe THIS is the special mix in STRANGELET. I think it is law, that every musician is influenced by the music he loves or the books he reads. It becomes magic at the point when he’s using the influences for good to create something new.

Has being from Germany influenced your sound or the way you play?

Funny. You can hear that I am German. But I have never tried to sound like a  U.S. boy or artist from England. This is me and I am fine with my slang. Musically we are more influenced by U.S. Hard Rock and British Heavy Metal, I think. It’s a funny mixture.

What has been your most meaningful experience being in this band so far?

I think the great festivals and shows we played this year. We have shared the stages with so great bands and musicians (such as Blaze Bayley, Eclipse, Mike Tramp, Damian Wilson etc.) and played for some great audiences. We LOVE to perform live.

Favorite memory from a show you’ve played or a place you’ve travelled?

I have had a couple of drinks and warm words with some great musicians. It is such an honor for us!

What do you hope to accomplish with your music?

No big master plan. We just want to play the music we love for the people we love. That simple.

What is next for the band?

Play more great shows, record a second album in 2016. Have fun and bring our Rock to the world.

Anything else you want to add?
