They’re back! Armed with their original line-up, SOiL are back to conquer the world with their upcoming album Whole that’s to be released on the 20th August. We were able to speak to their bassist Tim King about what it’s like having Ryan McCombs back in the band, a partially Pledgemusic funded album, and how the band are going back to their original style, which you can certainly hear on their new single ‘Shine on’. It ROCKS!
On April 29th, you revealed the name of your upcoming album with Paul Michaels. Was the revelation a surprise to fans?
The fans seem to be super excited about it. We got a ton of responses/questions when that came out.
The title of the album is Whole. What’s the meaning behind choosing that title?
It’s a play on words: The bullet hole on the front of the cover, then calling it “whole”, as in the band feels whole again with the reunion of me, Adam, and Ryan.
Does the sound/influences differ from previous SOiL records, and if so how does it?
It actually sounds very classic SOiL. It’s basically the album that could have come directly after the “scars” album. It’s heavy, angry and aggressive.
This record has Ryan McCombs fronting the band since Re.De.Fine, how does it feel having him back on the team?
Amazing. It feels like SOiL again!
What are the main theme’s concepts behind the album?
There really is no concept. We just wanted to make a classic sounding SOiL album that was true to our original direction of the band.
The album was funded by Pledgemusic. What does it feel like having fans contribute towards the album?
It wasn’t completely funded by that. It paid for a portion of the album recording. The main reason we did the campaign was to be able to record the album the way we wanted to without a label or A&R guy breathing down our neck and telling us what to do. Plus we wanted to give the fans and contributors a chance to get something like a private listening party, or dinner with the band, or limited edition merch that you couldn’t get normally.
Many artists are starting to use Pledgemusic, what are your thoughts on it?
It’s cool. And it helps the bands do what they do and be able to make new music. Plus the pledges get some cool stuff in return for their donation.
Have you got any surprises for fans after the release of Whole?
We have a few tricks up our sleeve. Stay tuned!
What can we expect to hear from you and SOiL in the future?
Lots of touring. We will be out on the road for a long time on this one.
