The Los Angeles qunitet, better known as the Butcher Babies, have released their sophomore EP Uncovered today under Century Media Records.  This is the band’s second EP to be released since the band’s creation, however it is the third cd/album release overall after the self-titled/self released Butcher Babies EP released in 2012 and the album Goliath released under Century Media Records in 2013.

Uncovered contains 5 cover tracks that the band collectively agree as just some of their favorite songs to cover by bands that they have enjoyed listening to their entire lives.  Carla Harvey, vocalist, stated:  “It was a blast recording songs that we have been fans of our entire lives and putting our spin on them.  We all chose a song that had some significance to us.  My pick was ‘They’re Coming To Take Me Away’ by NAPOLEAN XIV, because I have a vivid memory of my stepdad, who I considered completely insane, playing it over and over again on his car stereo when I was a pre-teen.  The song is about being taken away to a mental institution.  I can still see him tapping his fingers on his steering wheel to the beat…”

Heidi Shepherd, vocalist, stated:  “As an eight or nine-year-old little girl, I used to rummage through my parents’ albums and 8-tracks looking for some cool music.  In hopes that my parents had at least a little bit of good taste, I would play every single song looking for something that I could latch on to.  That’s when I came across ‘Crazy Horses’ by THE OSMONDS; it was the heaviest song I had heard at that age.  I would play that song over and over and over again, I was addicted.  To this date, it’s still one of my favorite songs and reminds me so much of growing up in Provo, Utah.”

Overall the EP is designed to keep their fans “happy” until the band can complete recording it’s highly anticipated follow up to Goliath next year.  The Butcher Babies have been actively on tour virtually non-stop and have found opportunities to write and/or record their forthcoming tracks at various venues or locations while on tour such as the Aftershock Bar & Grill in Merriam, KS  recently.

So does Uncovered indeed keep the fans happy?  The answer is a resounding Fuck Yes!  The very first track, a ZZ Top cover of  “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers” gets the blood flowing almost immediately when Carla Harvey and Heidi Shepherd’s voices are in unison singing the lyric “Beer Drinkers, Hell Raisers” repetitively.  The next track in sequence, a cover of Napolean XIV’s “They’re Coming To Take Me Away,” resonates hauntingly as the the echoing vocals are accompanied by a taunting guitar rhythm provided by Henry Flury on rhythm guitar, and Jason Klein on bass guitar.  The third track, a cover of Suicidal Tendencies’ “Don’t Give A Fuck,” seems to be recorded with one mission in mind…to utterly destroy the venue or stage that it would be played live in or on.  It’s high impact percussion, as generously provided by Chris Warner on drums, keeps the heart pounding non-stop and is destined to be a live outdoor festival favorite.  The fourth track, a cover of The Osmonds’ “Crazy Horses,” is being well received even by The Osmonds themselves.  Donny Osmond stated:  “When we released ‘Crazy Horses,’ we were pushing against what The Osmonds were known for, but it became a greatest hit. The Butcher Babies have reinvented this song in a creative and innovative way — and that’s what music is about. Now…what if I had recorded ‘Puppy Love’ like this?”  “Crazy Horses” is a unique twist on the original indeed as the signature ping pong back and forth vocals of Carla Harvey and Heidi Shepherd are heard during the chorus with a powerful bass backdrop provided by Jason Klein.  The fifth and final track of the EP is a cover of S.O.D.’s “Pussy Whipped.”  The incredibly fast vocals and tempo during this track are a great homage to the original track by S.O.D., making it yet another track destined to be a crowd pleaser during any live show.

A cleverly titled EP such as Uncovered could only be made even sweeter of an EP aside from it’s hard hitting, heart stopping tracks if it was priced nearly free, and lucky for fans, it nearly is.  At only $4.99 as priced on iTunes, fans can instantly download the EP for roughly just $1.00 a track, less than what it would cost you to Super Size that value meal — just sayin.  Tough to beat the price and unique covers with any similar band in the genre.  Simply put, go out and get this EP if you have a pulse and enjoy hard hitting music that is capable of stopping that pulse, or as the Butcher Babies have recently stated about today’s release of Uncovered:  “Don’t sit around picking your nose while you could be rocking out and picking your nose!”
