SINGLE REVIEW: WILLIAM CONTROL - THE MONSTER

644388d7-f189-44f3-b686-e06248d6e96bA renaissance man trapped in our modern millennia, mastermind William Control has brought us “The Monster”- the first single off of the forthcoming Pale EP set to debut in mid-October of this year. The way this musical act is going about publishing the new music is rather unique - four EP albums will be released (titled Pale, Black, Red, and White) that will cumulatively create the record, Revelations. An interesting approach that plays perfectly within the concepts and atmosphere set forth by the music itself.

The song “The Monster” features William Control’s nostalgic voice and singing style - easily recognizable and correspondingly as timeless. The lyrics are elegant and brilliant, and the melody equally as catchy. The music video for “The Monster”, filmed by longtime Control friend Terry Matlin, takes a very different approach than the previous William Control videos. Portrayed in black and white fading into a red towards the end, the intentional color scheme sets the tone for this song and greatly influences the viewer’s perception of the story itself. With sporadic story cuts intertwined with raw - edgy even - portrait shots of the front man and his Neuromantic Boys (Kenneth Fletcher [Bass], Benny Tourkantonis [Drums], and Ian MacWilliams [Keys]), this video approaches the concept in a controlled visual chaos. Someone who is more visual will surely appreciate the practical filming effects featured in this new music video, from dancing shadows to playing with focus and depth-of-field. To not give the ending away, the method in which ‘the monster’ was revealed and treated was a very clever story-telling trick, and I greatly appreciated it.

William has been rather busy with his projects - from playing Aiden’s last shows to putting his Revelator vision to the silver screen- and we cannot wait to be immersed in the visual and audible experience once more.

  1. Awesome song, as expected. Usually that’s really not my genre and I only checked William Control back in 2008 cause I knew Wil from Aiden, but that formerly side project really got to me. I searched for similar music, couldn’t find anything that came close though.
