SHOW REVIEW AND PHOTOS: YELLOWCARD

Yellowcard with New Found Glory and Tiger’s Jaw

Portland got punked when our friends Tigers Jaw, New Found Glory, and Yellowcard came to the Roseland Theater. No, we’re not talking about dumbass pranks by Ashton Kutcher. We’re talking about some seriously awesome punk rock! Tigers Jaw opened up with their catchy song “Chemicals” and played a short set before turning the stage over to New Found Glory.

New Found Glory brought the heat when they took over the Roseland. I guess they didn’t get the memo that Yellowcard would be headlining. New Found Glory played nineteen songs, much to the pleasure of the crowd-surfing, head-banging masses. About midway through their set, after singing their song “Vicious Love,” the band brought a Portland fan up onto the stage. The crowd roared as the fan, who we learned was named Ed, was handed the reins by Jordan Pundik, “Ed, you’ve been up front singing along with every song. Look down on the stage at our setlist, and pick one of our songs you’d like to hear that isn’t on the setlist.” Ed glanced through the list and told them he’d like to hear “The Fool.” The band members convened on the stage and came to the conclusion that they didn’t know it. “Is that one of our songs?” Ed explained which album it’s on, and Pundik laughed and played off not knowing the song since it was a B-side track.  Ed then changed his request to “Angel.” Again, the band looked stymied. But then, guitarist Chad Gilbert said, “I know that one!” He stepped up and played some riffs. Jordan shook his head and said he couldn’t remember the lyrics! Ed whipped out his handy iPhone with the lyrics and handed it to Jordan. With iPhone in hand, New Found Glory lived up to their band name. Although they had never played the song live, they did an amazing job, and Ed achieved punk rock immortality. At one point during the set, the band took a moment to acknowledge the events of attacks in Paris. Jordan Pundik said, “Usually when events like this occur, we recognize a moment of silence for the lost. That’s just what these terrorists want, to silence us.” He then asked for a moment of noise, for everyone to just scream. Ultimately. he urged them to not be silenced. The Roseland Theater roared as every music fan in the house let their voice ring out. New Found Glory closed out their set with “My Friends Over You.”

When Yellowcard took the stage, it looked like the Portland crowd might be out of gas. But as soon as the chugging riff from the opening of “Breathing” started, the Roseland came back to life. For those that haven’t heard Yellowcard before, the band features Sean Mackin on the violin. Many bands have violins played on backing tracks or the occasional fill. Yellowcard is not one of those bands. Sean masterfully commands the bow, playing much like a lead guitar over the rhythm of each song. The band sounded incredibly tight. Lead singer Ryan Key was soulful and passionate through the entire set. His solo piano intro for “Empty Apartment” was particularly moving. Yellowcard played a great set, but I found myself wanting more. “Only One,” and “Ocean Avenue” were the icing on the cake, closing out an amazing show.
