Last night, Jimmy Eat World performed to a near sold out crowd at Birmingham, AL based venue, Iron City.
The audience, ranging from teenagers to adults in middle age, never lost energy, even when the band’s slower songs were played.
To start of the night was a geeky group of dudes who go by “AJJ” (Formerly Andrew Jackson Jihad)
Their songs were hilarious and aptly titled, like “Love Will Fuck Us A Part.”
The best song from their set was a tune titled “Linda Ronstadt.” “Today I lost my shit in a museum. It was a video installation of Linda Ronstadt. I really miss my friends but I don’t see them. All I see is this video of Linda Ronstadt.”
There have been very few times I have seen an opening band make an entire audience laugh, but AJJ did it with real goofiness.
When Jimmy Eat World finally took the stage, I was prepared to sing every word to every song. I was not prepared to have no voice and have tears running down my face from happiness and excitement.
I have seen this band several times over the last few years and this was the best I have ever seen them. Every note from every song was intentional. It sounded like it was being played straight from the album, but you could hear the difference. It was the kind of show that die-hard fans dream of.
The set spanned their entire catalog, which is something that most bands have gotten away from.
When I walked out of the building, I was satisfied with everything I had just experienced and that is how it should be.
