5 Essential Albums – Martijn Westerholt

Music inspires us all. However, what music inspires and moves some of our favorite artists? Let’s find out! We asked Martijn Westerholt of Delain what albums he believed to be the most influential to her and music in general. This is what he had to say!

Metallica – Black Album

Let me start for example with the Black Album for Metallica. Because I think that’s one of my favorite albums. I also think it changed something in a way albums are produced back then. It was like the beginning of the 90s. For example, a song like Nothing Else Matters is a ballad but when you hear the drums, it’s big and fat and that hasn’t been done with ballads before. That’s kind of a revolution there.

Queen – Greatest Hits

Another one, I’m a big Queen fan. Actually more and more over the years. One of the reasons we covered “Scandalwhich for me was really scary. I was considering covering Queen musical suicide.

Because nobody does it better than Freddie.

No exactly. Amen to that. I would like to name a Queen album but I could not really name a particular Queen album. Perhaps I should say Best of album. It’s just Queen for me changed a lot.

Sehnsucht – Rammstein

And Rammstein I think would be a really good one. Name me one other artist whether people outside Germany sing along in German. I cannot name any. I think Rammstein is one. I think it is a very original artist and an original band. I would say Sehnsucht from Rammstein. That’s kind of a revolutionary album.

Ghost – Dance Macabre

Another album I really personally like is the last album from Ghost – Dance Macabre. Such good songwriting and I don’t know if it’s revolutionary, I think it kind of grabs back to the 80s.

It’s risky and that made it interesting.

I agree but I think they did it so well and very catchy songs. I know people who hate it, I know people who love it and I’m one on the last part.

Pink Floyd – Division Bell

For my last one: Pink Floyd – Division Bell.  Division Bell is from the 90s if I’m correct. 1994 .something like that. I was born in 1979 so I was really very musically aware at that time and I really loved the vibe of that album. Because they don’t play too much – The less is more principal and that’s what they do so well. And that’s sometimes so difficult in music, making it too lush, too much going on and they don’t do that.

I think it’s very representative of what Pink Floyd does.

Yes absolutely. You could also name earlier albums of course. For me that’s an album I really like very much.
