LIVE SHOW REVIEW & PHOTOS: THE CULT

The Cult Hidden City picIt was a rock n’ roll show at the Shubert Theatre in Boston as The Cult pulled into town. Located in the heart of Boston, the Shubert Theatre opened its doors in 1910. With a capacity of 1,600, it’s a great place to see a show.  Surrounded by plenty of places for a pre-show beverage, arrive early and don’t worry too much about parking, as there is plenty in the area.
Formed in the early 80’s in the UK by vocalist/songwriter, Ian Astbury, as Southern Death Cult, The Cult would take shape in 1983 with the addition of guitarist, Billy Duffy. Soon after they would change their name simply to The Cult to gain a wider appeal. They have released ten studio albums through numerous line-up changes, on bass and drums, as well as few hiatuses. With their unique sound, sometimes described as metal with a mystical vibe, led by Astbury’s oftentimes haunting vocals, there really is no band to compare them to; they are their own genre.  With singles such as “Love Removal Machine”, “She Sells Sanctuary”, and “Fire Woman”, The Cult have amassed sales in the millions worldwide most notable with the albums Love, Electric and Sonic Temple. Their latest album, Hidden City, was released on February 5th staying true to their roots with a spiritual theme.

On the evening in question, The Cult would play to a packed house, giving Boston a great mix of new music and classics. No frills, just five guys doing what they do best: playing great music.  This isn’t some washed-up band from the 80’s; these guys brought the energy. Duffy provided some of the most recognizable riffs in rock, and Astbury danced around with tambourine in hand as if he were leading a Native American ceremony.  They sounded tight and played with a youthfulness that let the crowd know in no uncertain terms that they were happy to be there all these years later.  The Cult is a great, very underrated band that I suggest anyone see. There is no sound more unique and songs better written than you will find with The Cult. Don’t miss this show as it passes through your town.
