Interview: Watch Them Fly

IMG_7217Watch Them Fly from Minneapolis are breathing new life into the metalcore scene by fusing pop punk vibes into their songs but still keeping all the hooks. Keep an eye out for their upcoming EP The Veil which will be dropping soon.

What was the group’s biggest highlight since forming in 2012?

Our biggest highlight since 2012 would be opening for Killswitch Engage in Milwaukee Wisconsin at The Rave/Eagles Club.

Who’s the biggest nerd of the band? What do they nerd out on?

We are all pretty big nerds but Corey takes the cake. He only exclusively plays turn-based Dungeons and Dragons games such as Pillars of Eternity and Baldur’s Gate.

Describe the song-writing process. How do you know when a song is finally complete?

We start off with either a melody or guitar riff then record it into Pro Tools. Then we begin to build the structure of the song and what emotion we want to convey. We know when a song is finished by being able to listen to it and you feel it 100%

How has your music evolved since you first started playing?

Our music has evolved throughout the years into the sound that we always wanted to hear. We’re still perfecting our craft but are super stoked for the material we are working on.

What’s the best way Watch Them Fly shows love to their fans?

Talking to them and listening to all the different walks of life our fan base has. Being able to share experiences and connect with everyone is important to us.

What’s the most embarrassing thing anyone in the band has had happen while onstage? Details please.

The most embarrassing thing that has happened on stage was the time when we were playing All-Stars tour and our bassist hit our lead guitar player in the face which gave him a bloody nose and bled all over his shirt. After the set, he realized that he didn’t have a backup so he had to wear a women’s tank top.

Name a couple of musicians that have given you all those good vibes and inspiration on your most recent project.

Robin Trower, David Bowie, The Neighborhood, The “Translating The Name” EP by Saosin, Bring Me The Horizon, Our Last Night, Memphis Mayfire.

Is there any specific food or drink that the band always consumes before a show? What about after you’re offstage?

Before a show, we always have one good luck shot of Rumple Minze and then green tea and water. After the show, we have usually another shot of Rumple Minze and a beer followed up by water, green tea, and maybe some more Rumpiez.

How do you feel the message of Watch Them Fly has changed since the release of your first EP “Old Ways” until the group’s latest single and upcoming EP “The Veil”?

I’d say we have honed our sound a lot better. We have grown as writers together which allows us to now really unleash the full potential of our sound.

Where are a few places we could find the members of Watch Them Fly hanging out when not in the studio or ripping up a venue?

Grabbing some coffee from Caribou, driving around and jamming tunes, playing disc golf, grabbing a drink or playing video games.

Peace or freedom (you can’t have both). Why?

Peace because you cannot have freedom if people are not at peace with themselves.

Worst thing ever eaten? Details!

Rocky Mountain Oysters. The texture is a little bit too creamy.

What was the last song you listened to before this interview?

One of our new demo songs from the album we are currently working on.

What can we expect from Watch Them Fly for the rest of 2016 and what are your future goals?

Expect new music from us, more shows and hopefully a big tour before the year is out. As for future goals, we are looking to land a new record deal and be able to get on more stages and play for more people to show what we can do.
