There is no busier band today than Memphis May Fire! Currently touring their wildly successful album, Unconditional, follow-up to Challenger (2012),they are gearing up again for what may be one of their most ambitious tours to date! Co-headlining with Yellowcard, the tour kicks off in Las Vegas on 10/16 and wraps around the U.S. (with a date in Toronto), and concludes in San Francisco on 11/16 (See dates below!) Amidst all the madness, we caught up with Matty Mullins, during his recent gig in Columbia, taking a quick break from the stage to answer a few questions for us about his new albums, his wife, as well as giving some wise words of wisdom for his fans.
You really seem to have put your heart and soul into the album Unconditional; can you tell us what your biggest inspiration was when writing the lyrics?
Unconditional tells a story of the hardest times I’ve ever been through in my life, but the ultimate message is that God’s Unconditional love is enough to bring peace and healing into anyone’s life.
Back in 2011, you told The Aquarian in an interview The Hollow is easily the best record we’ve ever done and so for it to come out on a label that we respect and trust is amazing”. How would you compare this success to that of the album Unconditional?
That was true about The Hollow back then, and it’s true about Unconditional now. Rise (Records) is very good to us.
We’re all waiting for your new debut solo album to be released, and we all fell in love with the song “My Dear”. What made you go from playing heavier stuff alongside Memphis May Fire, to something much more soft and deep?
I grew up going to contemporary festivals and pop rock concerts with my mom. It wasn’t until high school that I got into heavier music. I love the music Memphis May Fire writes and I always will, but I’d be lying to myself if I said I didn’t want to do a record like this too! I’m just so happy that I can do both!

Fans absolutely adore you and your wife as a couple. What did you two do for your anniversary?
I was in Mexico on our anniversary but I made sure to have flowers, chocolate, balloons, and a teddy bear delivered to the house. Every day feels like an anniversary to us!
And finally, do you have any words of advice for a fan or friend who might be going through a rough patch?
The God that created you is OBSESSED with you. He loves everything about who you are and who you are becoming. Trust His plan and don’t let the opinions of the world dictate your self worth; you are amazing.
