It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through 2014.  There have been quite a few heavy releases this year, many of which I will continue to indulge in for some time to come.  One record that I have been looking forward to is Allegaeon’s  Elements of the Infinite.  Now, after a slight change in lineup, the Colorado metallers are back with a polished sound.

It wasn’t long ago when I stumbled across Allegaeon  (uh-lee-juhn) and 2012’s “Formshifter”  for the first time.  I was most likely at home in my PJ’s searching the World Wide Web for new metal.  When I spotted the name Allegaeon  and hit the preview button, I was a bit taken back, in a good way.  Immediately, the band’s technical approach to Melodic Death Metal had me reaching for my wallet.  Speed, intensity, groove, melody – it was all there. This time around, Allegaeon  delivers what can be expected from them at this point, with a matured edge that is noticeable from the first listen.

Although this record is very enjoyable from start to finish, I am a bit concerned. While I am fond of just about every song, I’m not sure if “Elements of the Infinite” will have a replay value as high as some other 2014 Melodeath offerings.  Many cuts on this album are engaging, but each does not necessarily stand out in its own way.  The album as a whole blends together.  I fear this will lead some to forget about it over time.  However, this is not necessarily a deal-breaker.  Perhaps after a few more listens I will be won over completely.

Some quick specifics – The tunes that I find myself indulging in the most on “Elements” as of late are “Dyson Sphere”, “1.618”, and “Gravimetric Time Dilation”, among others. “1.618” is the song that I probably have played the most, and for good reason. Songs such as this undoubtedly showcase Allegaeon’s unique capability of combining catchy, melodic parts with sheer brutality.

In short, this record is worth a listen. If you like hard-hitting aggressiveness as well as melody, there is something for you on Elements of the Infinite. Musicians – prepare to feel like shit about your playing ability on your instrument of choice. You have been warned. Elements of the Infinite is out now via Metal Blade Records. Pick up a copy and support heavy music.
