Have you ever wished your life was like a Quentin Tarantino movie? Probably not, unless you wish to die bloody and barefoot by a man in a suit saying something weird and possibly racist. Have you ever wished your life was like a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack? You bet your ass you have, and the new Reverend Horton Heat album delivers that same blood-pumping sound.
With their fast-paced, 50s rockabilly punk sound, and that undercurrent of violence that could easily switch to a regular current of violence at any moment, REV is the perfect music to listen to during a car chase or a diner robbery, or when emptying a machine gun clip into Adolf Hitler. It’s an incredibly cinematic album, and it is not recommended to listen to it while lounging around or you won’t get the full experience.
One of the best songs on REV is “Zombie Dumb”. It sounds like it should be playing over the opening credits of a post-apocalyptic 1950s surfer movie, which is a genre that doesn’t exist yet, but should. If you’re on the beach doing the Monkey to this chaotic and in-your-face jam and one of your arms happens to fall out of your rotting arm socket, just pick it up, wave it in the air, groan loudly, and keep dancing, baby.
“Mad Mad Heart” is a song to blast at full volume while smashing mailboxes with a baseball bat out the window of a Cadillac. Sure, you might be the bully in a Stephen King story, but why worry about when Jim Heath’s psychobilly melodies are telling it’s cool to go put the fear of God into a couple of nerds.
For the romantics in all of us, “Hardscabble Woman” is the song you hear deep down in your soul when meeting the love of your short life at the local honkytonk. This toe-tapping beat about the most salacious lady of your dreams will have you running and stomping to find love in all the wrong places.
REV is the album to play when there’s imminent doom in the not too distant future, but who cares about that shit when there’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, leather jackets and teenage love. Open your switch blades and snap your fingers to these tunes and you’re sure to scare the socks off some squares on their way to 4H. REV has got it RAW!
