Having been a Northlane fan for a few years now, initially this album took me a few listens to go all the way through and give it a fair chance. With the change in vocalists from former lead, Adrian, to new addition, Marcus, I was hesitant. I am a huge fan of Adrian’s vocals especially on their first full-length, Discoveries. Having gotten that out of the way, I will say, if that’s the style you’re interested in then this may not be an album you like. Marcus differs pretty substantially from Adrian in style and technique. In my opinion, Marcus has a far better singing voice but doesn’t quite hit the lows that Adrian could. I don’t want to only compare the two vocalists but it’s a big change for a band to go through.

Northlane proves with Node that they still have what it takes to be a real hit-maker in the hardcore/metal genre. I truly do like this album and although it’s only just released, I’m excited to see what else Northlane has in store for fans. The music, melodically, is very on point. Songs like “Obelisk” and “Rot” really standout to me in terms of great sound and technicality. I think they showcase well what Marcus brings to the band.

I’ll admit that having previously been a fan of the band I judge this album more harshly than I would if it was a first release and I’m biased in that aspect. I’ll always say these are just my opinions and I think you should always check things out yourself. Even if you feel like you’ll only like Northlane’s older albums check this one out for sure. It might sound like a different band entirely from that of Discoveries or even Singularity, but that’s all the more reason to give it a chance. There’s no reason not to listen to something new or different!
