ALBUM REVIEW: IN SOLITUDE – SISTER

in solitude sister

In Solitude’s junior album Sister is a REAL motherfucker.

Let me explain. As a child growing up, I can recall the punk movement in its heyday, and the after effects: the postpunk era, (“deathrock” is typically the term here, and although some use the “gothrock” term, there is a difference) and I also remember when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal hit.

Fast forward to now, and the “retro” movement of Occult rock. Now, to a guy like me, who was there and lived through it all, it takes a lot to impress me. Many try to emulate the sound, but few succeed. In Solitude, on the other hand, have nailed it so hard, that I find myself recalling those years fondly, and it feels like this was an album from back in the day that I somehow overlooked. Hence, the Motherfucker status.

I. Cannot. Stop. Playing. It. It’s getting absurd really, to be this fixated at my age. And what really scrambles my egg-bag is that they are so young! How could they replicate that sound so well, unless they were there at the time? With perfect vocals, the right tones and notes, just exactly how in the fuck does he sing it like that? It’s thoughts like this that keeps me up at night.

The new album is such a conglomerate of influences that I keep pulling out all my old records, to see if what I’m hearing is really there. It’s blended so seamlessly, and feels so effortless, but it’s still something entirely new: a crossing of that Mercyful Fate guitar sound, an extra dash of occultism just for fun, some Swans, some early brooding Fields of the Nephilim, and a dash of The Damned energy.

In that aforementioned early 80s way, that I thought was long gone. Standout tracks like “Lavender”, “Sister”, and “Horses in the Ground” really hammer it home how much I miss the old days. Brilliant and atmospheric, highly recommended.

In Solitude’s new release, Sister, has so captured the feel of the early 80s, that I half wish I could go back and relive that era again. You know, the one with the hot deathrock and Metal chicks everywhere? Unbelievably and undeniably, their best release yet. Absolutely a must own.
