If I could choose one word to describe the latest release from the progressive rock group Anathema  it would be POWERFUL!

For over a decade, Anathema  has trod a road filled with a vast array of musical styles.  Their latest release Distant Satellites  takes us on a lyrical voyage infused with a spectrum of emotions.  Here are just a few of the songs that really touched my heart:

“The Lost Song Parts 1 and 2” display both sides of a romantic relationship which has come to an end.  In “Part 1” the instrumental environment shifts from fast tempo to a state of frenzy in sync with Vincent’s heart-wrenching vocals.  His provocative voice conveys perfectly the pain, anguish and torment of a lost love.  Listening, you can hear and feel that despite the pain, there is a glimmer of hope as well as the fear of trying to move on to a new life without his lover.

In “Part 2” – Lee’s sensual, haunting voice is accompanied by a very relaxing mood that exposes the heartbreaking loss of her true amour.   As in “Part 1,” there is still a sliver of hope that he will return with the line “Can’t believe this was an illusion.”

TracksThe song “Ariel” highlights the light, wispy tones of Lee’s expressive voice as she sweeps the listener into a dreamlike state–reveling in her adoration with a tinge of fear at a possible future romance.  Vincent’s seductive, yet reassuring, vocals echo her concern.  This harmonious, elegant blend transports us back to the brink of romance, and brings rushing back all the emotions that we have experienced standing on that ledge.

“The Lost Song Part 3’s” upbeat and energetic music sets the tone of elation and completeness as the once-separated lovers have found each other again.  Their love is reignited as they enthusiastically cry that they will hold onto each other as they proceed together into the unknown future.

Distant Satellites from Anathema  is a phenomenal creation combining impressive instrumentals and extremely compelling vocals that engulf the soul of all who listen. An expressive 4 skulls!
