ALBUM REVIEW: DISFIGURING THE GODDESS – DEPRIVE

Disfiguring the GoddessI’ve never been a fan of death metal, it never really seemed appealing. And when Disfiguring The Goddess was handed over I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Here’s a brief background – Disfiguring the Goddess is a guy called Cameron Argon, who writes, records, produces, and sings on all of the tracks. And it sounds like a whole band who are playing, not just one guy playing guitar and painting his face black and white to live with the other Death Metal lot. Each track is as bludgeoning as they come, stereotypically titled to match the doomy quality doesn’t stop the assault. “The Pathway to Everlasting Nothingness” is on first, which provides room for Cameron to show how versatile he is, and “Death’s Head Mask” has what sounds like a choir in it. “Home of the Dollmaker” adds a more industrial/groove feel to the album, before Deprive brings it all back to the death metal roots. Just halfway through an album I’ve already been converted, and now Death Metal seems to be something new to me, almost like a revelation.  “Industrial Quarter” brings a odd vibe to the mix, sounding like something out of TesseracT  and Fear Factory.

I find myself struggling for words trying to sum up this album. This review’s short but I can’t write much more. The album itself is musically – and production wise – stunning. I’m still not used to the growling vocals, but for one guy to produce all of this is effectively having a one man army should have a legion of dedicated fans at his feet, ready to prove to the world that Death Metal is something not to mess with.
