We must admit that when we heard the rumblings last summer that yet another Lowery boy was in the process of recording an album in Atlanta with a new band, it was easy to assume that little bro, Dustin, was perhaps trying to capitalize on the successes of his older brothers Clint (Sevendust, Call Me No One) and Corey (Eye Empire, Stereomud).  We hereby confess that we were completely wrong, and proudly name Viasava as our Indie Band of the Week!
Viasava is the absolute personification of a perfectly fused band; entwining the seasoned musicianship of Gogi Randhawa (guitar/backup vocals),  Alex Dorminy (drums), John Ballard (bass) with Dustin Lowery‘s amazing vocal range.  Solidifying that claim is Viasava’s  debut album One Year Down,  which put this quartet into the spotlight almost overnight.  It’s 13-tracks of solid rock with a refreshing new sound which mixes old school headbanging with a modern twist.
Although it would be easy to use the connections afforded to the Lowery dynasty of music, Viasava has been taking the DIY route thus far with amazing results.  First and foremost, they have proven their professionalism to the business-end of music by doing all of the right things out of the gate.  Armed with a kickass album in One Year Down, the band has been building their brand online in a major way via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube Channel (with high-quality videos) and a clean, professional website.  They are extremely interactive with their fans online and  include them in the creative processes and other band happenings via video, which they obviously enjoy very much and do it well.  They further promote the hell out of their gigs, prompting over 600 fans to come out en mass to their first show alone, and have had solid attendance since, gaining fans around the nation with their energy-packed live performances.

Another thing that we love about Viasava is the philanthropic views shared by everyone in the band, which is befitting as the word “Viasava” is Punjabi (Indian) for “by way of service” and they believe in giving back. Therefore, each band member gets to pick a charity of their choice, and 10% of all physical sales go to that organization.  Here’s a great explanation by the guys themselves:

The latest charitable project for Viasava is the inclusion of their previously unreleased song “Witness” which will be featured on the Battlefield of the Mind soundtrack.  The documentary, directed by Fran Strine and co-produced by Aaron Lewis of Staind, discusses the plight of veterans returning home from war and suffering with PTSD.  The soundtrack also features performances from members of Evanescence, Staind, Megadeth, Eye Empire, LoPro and DoubleDrive.  The film’s score was written by Mike Mushok of Staind and it is narrated by Dave Ellefson of Megadeth.  All proceeds from the sale of the soundtrack will go to programs that help Veterans.   The movie and soundtrack will be released on March 13, 2013.  Check out the trailer and pre-order both at chill.com.
Viasava is looking forward to touring in 2013 to further promote One Year Down which is available on iTunes, Amazon and the band’s website.  While they are currently unsigned, we strongly suggest that a smart label snatch this band up…pronto!
