Three Days Grace electrifies “Human Race”
At KC Live stage at The Power and Light District in Kansas City
With Aluna and Echo Vendetta
On a beautiful Midwest night at the Power and Light District in downtown Kansas City, MO, the KC Live stage had all that it could handle with Three Days Grace, Echo Vendetta and Aluna.
Aluna kicked the night off and set the tone for the rest of the evening. The trio from KC hit the stage and delivered their melodic mix between hard and heavy. The crowd was locked in from the start and was in store for a great night of music.
Up next, Echo Vendetta, also hailing from KC, kept the energy alive. As Jonny Collichio put it he was the asshole separating the crowd from the band they were there to see; that being Three Days Grace of course. I do not think the crowd minded much as band members rained down glow sticks and leis on the crowd. I think they wanted to keep with the carnival theme going with Ringling Brothers next door at the Sprint Center.
As the crowd awaited Three Days Grace, “Killing In The Name Of” started blasting through the PA system. Everyone turned back to the stage and started singing along as a slight interference made its way through the song and their opening clip took over. As the band made their way to the stage they ripped into “I Am Machine” and lit the fuse that would ignite the rest of the night’s performance. As the opening riff of “Just Like You” roared through KC Live the crowd went ape shit and every time Matt Walst gave the audience a chance to sing along he got the full participation of the crowd. This gave me the first opportunity to here Matt’s vocals on some of the older Three Days Grace songs. Sure it sounded a little different but he delivered every song new or old like they were all his from the start. We also found out during our interview with Neil Sanderson that Matt has writing credits on previous Three Days Grace albums. As the night went on so did the hits, “Chalk Outline” “Pain” “Higher Place” and all were delivered to fans with 115% from every member of the band. For a group that has been out on the road for as long as they have been, they looked fresh, energized; hell you would have thought this was the start of the tour.
“Home” another crowd favorite was not just another song on the set list, it had a special little twist in it as “Sober” by Tool seamlessly transitioned in to play. Everyone in place cheered and immediately started to sing along, and then after a verse and the chant of “I want what I want” another seamless through back into “Home” to finish the song off.
As everyone left the stage save Neil Sanderson and Dani Rosenor who was performing keyboard duties. They proceeded to turn out a fantastic duet of drums and keyboard. After their brief showing, Neil was left alone on stage to tinker around with his kit a little bit. Tinker, no he beat the living piss out of those drums to what would be a spectacle of lights and sounds that had the crowd cranked to 11. You have to give it to whoever did the lighting scheme for Neil’s solo, it was amazing, with every beat a well-timed flicker of the lights to go right along with it.
Something else I feel that I need to point out, Barry Stock is one bad ass mofo on the guitar. I am not sure if his sound just does not come out as well on recordings but live and in person, he is one of the most exciting guitarist I have seen. Mr. Stock looks as if he could fill in with ZZ Top on a moment’s notice and plays like it as well. I honestly had to fight myself from just watching Barry the whole time as he tore through like he was having the time of his life, and really by watching everyone on that stage I felt as if they all were having a blast being out there with the fans.
After the solo and everyone joined Neil back on stage, they treated the crowd with a duo of songs off “Human,” “Painkiller” and “Fallen Angel,” which were well received by the fans. After that it was time for a little bit of “The Good Life” followed by one of my favorites and the song that got me listening to Three Days Grace “I Hate Everything About You”. I have a feeling that one was also a favorite of the crowds as well as I think everyone in the audience was singing right along with Matt.
As the night wound down the energy did not, as “Never Too Late” and “Animal I Have Become” kept the crowd whipped into a frenzy and begging for more. What I thought was genius is their closing song which could have just as easily been the opener, “Riot,” which of course cries out “Lets start a riot” had these people rocking KC Live and ready for the next time Three Days Grace comes back to Kansas City.
If you are looking for a show to get you moving and energized this is the one for you, I suggest seeing this show when it rolls into or near your area.
