Blissful psychedelic hippie oriental electronic experimental pop music. Yes, this is quite a handful to spill from your mouths, but this is exactly what the duo The Glass Canoe have done with their most recent album Through Lianas. It takes your mind on a trip at first, making you think, “What the hell is this?” but once that’s over and done with, the album is essentially a sonic masterpiece.
Hint – when I say sonic, there are many textures riddled with and many sounds transformed into something unique, especially with the opening track “Quasi” and its follow-up “Don’t Find,” which not take a backseat to its own oddness. “Miss that Love” is a bit more coherent with lyrics that are more revealing over a slide guitar resonating over a bluesy beat. The vocal delivery is nothing short of beautiful. This is when it goes unusual just four tracks in, and then there’s a more dance track/pop track/what-the-hell-is-going-on sound emerging. As much as the whole mix and match cross over sounds like something that shouldn’t work. But that’s what makes this odd – because it works! Blood On The Dance Floor have tried and spectacularly failed, but what the duo David Korrigan and Max O’Reilly have done just exceeds all known boundaries of creating and distorting sonic landscapes into something that regular folk couldn’t even imagine. “Face” is a more jumpy track which is accompanied by a frighteningly trippy bass line and a blend of just something special. One of the best tracks is “Side-Scroller” because there is finally an influence that can be identified, but the thing is that when you know who they are (in this case, it’s Daft Punk) that influence is just blown out of the water and seems insignificant to the magnitude of what The Glass Canoe have achieved.
Let’s put this into something where it makes it sound like I haven’t gone mad and end up rambling. Basically, what The Glass Canoe have created is just phenomenal and nothing less. Through Lianas is a masterpiece and nothing more, and the next time you say you’ve heard something is “Mind Blowing” then listen to the album in your own time. You’ll never look at that phrase in the same way again.
