SHOW REVIEW: TRAPT

TRAPT Mirror shotContinuing the one-year anniversary celebration at the Jewel Nightclub in Manchester, NH was Trapt. The California natives would pick up where Pop Evil left off 24 hours prior, closing out a two-night party extravaganza. Moving into their second year, the Jewel Nightclub is already looking to maintain their status as southern New Hampshire’s premier rock club with Orgy set to take the stage in early January, followed by Hinder. This is truly a great way to kick off their sophomore year in business! Check out http://www.jewelnh.com/ to keep up to date on the latest announcements.

Now it had been a while since I heard anything from Trapt, and truthfully, I wasn’t overall familiar with their body of work that encompasses eight albums, including an acoustic release of some of their biggest hits and a re-recorded greatest hits complilation. Of course, we all know the monster hit “Headstrong”, which was about all the experience I’ve had with them, or so I thought.

Coming onto the scene two decades ago, lead vocalist Chris Taylor Brown and bassist Peter “Pete” Charell started Trapt during their high school days and were playing local venues before receiving their diplomas. Releasing their debut album, Amalgamation, in 1999 laid the foundation for their major label, self-titled debut that would go on to produce three top-ten singles, including “Headstrong”, and achieve double platinum status. Over the next decade and then some, they would release four more albums and embark on countless tours with some of rock’s biggest names, including Papa Roach, Halestorm, Nickelback, and Motley Crue. Now into their third decade, Trapt is poised to continue their long run with two new singles, “Passenger“, and “Human“, and their soon to be released seventh album, DNA, due in early 2016.

The night of the show at the Jewel, Trapt would treat us to a 19-song setlist with something from every album. Opening the set was their latest single, “Human, which continues to build on their unique, signature hard rock sound. As they moved through their hour and a half plus set, I was reminded that Trapt is more than just “Headstrong”. There is nothing like a live show to jog your memory, and this set did exactly that, with their singles, “Still Frame”, and, “Echo”, from their self-titled record, and, “Stand Up” off of 2005’s Someone in Control, I had forgotten they had a number of hits. Another new one making its way onto the setlist is the more progressive single, “Passenger”, giving fans a further taste of what to expect from their upcoming release, DNA.

With a solidified line-up, rounded out by Dylan Thomas Howard on the drums and Ty Fury on lead guitar, Trapt are poised to give us another two plus decades of rock n’ roll. But don’t take my word for it; get over to their website where you can hear the latest singles and check out their tour dates so you, too, can be reminded that Trapt is more than one song. Their show is definitely worth seeing. http://www.trapt.com/
