SHOW REVIEW: Motley Crue with special guest Alice Cooper

CrueCooper1

The Final Tour made its way into Massachusetts on a hot, muggy August night. The bands would play to a packed DCU Center in Worcester, MA. Once known as the Centrum, this nearly 15,000 seat venue has played host to the Crue many times over the years but this would be the final time Mick Mars; lead guitar, Tommy Lee; drums, Vince Neil; vocals, and Nikki Sixx; main songwriter and bassist, would take the stage in the state of Massachusetts. This would be the event to end all events and Worcester, MA was lucky enough to host them.

Motley Crue would not be the only legends taking the stage. The original shock rocker, Alice Cooper, would fire things up with his elaborate stage show, reminiscent of a Hollywood Horror flick. Complete with a guillotine used to behead Cooper himself, this show is worthy of a run on Broadway. I have never been a big fan of Alice Cooper’s music but after this display, I would be willing to purchase a ticket to one of his headlining shows. Kudos to the Crue for having the balls to put someone of this stature in the opening slot. There only hope was to top it and as I would find out they would.

With Alice Cooper wrapping up his 13 song setlist with the 1972 hit single “School’s Out” it was time for Crue’s crew to get to work putting the final touches on what would be an epic show.

As the melody of Roger & Hammerstein’s “So Long, Farewell” rang throughout the DCU Center it was time. With the curtain drop and the echoes of the Harley, the original LA rockers went right to work with “Girls, Girls, Girls.” Now with over 100 million records sold and countless hits, I wonder who had the daunting task of putting together the setlist for this final tour and how they go about it. Second, I would like to know who the mastermind was behind the show. In today’s world, it is easy to get a look at a concert before attending with everyone and their brother recording and posting videos all over the internet and I’m guilty of taking a peek here and there (although I try not to as it’s like someone telling you the ending of a movie the day before you go see it) but I can say YouTube cannot replace the experience of being there and this show is one you do not want to miss.

setlist - motley crueCarrying on from where Alice Cooper left off the Crue would take the theatrics to another level. They would take us on a trip through their history giving the crowd a great balance from the early days and a few from the new millennium. It wasn’t just about the music, it was the show and boy, did they bring it. With enough pyro to burn down a city, their elaborate setup included platforms on each side of the stage and in the back, set high in the middle Tommy Lee with a large pentagram behind him. Then there was Nikki’s fire breathing bass that would shoot flames reminiscent of a dragon. This leg of the tour would see the addition of two arms that would extend from the arena ceiling each supporting Nikki and Vince putting them out over the crowd. But the real deal came with Tommy Lee’s cruecifly! This thing is a combination of all the crazy concoctions Lee has sat behind over the years. It combined the 360 rotation of his “Girls, Girls, Girls” kit with the elevated over-the-crowd set of the “Dr. Feelgood” days up to the last tour’s roller coaster. You may have seen it on video at some point but until you see it live you really have not see it. This has to be one of the craziest, most epic props I have ever seen at a live show. I would buy a ticket to the show just to see this ridiculousness. Looking up only to see Tommy looking down from his upside down, suspended drumkit. How in the world they pulled this off is an engineering feat in itself and I can’t even imagine the cost behind it. This is why you go to a Motley Crue show: you will leave feeling like you have seen the best concert of your life. They may not always been on cue or sound tight but who gives a shit as they will bring you an amazing show every night.

If you have not made it out to this final tour yet (and I know we’ve heard it a million times before, “final tour”, but with the signing of the cessation of touring agreement I would say this is about as serious as any artist can take it) there is still time to catch one of the most amazing tours in history. Even if you do not love their music I guarantee you will walk about feeling like you got more than your money’s worth for the show. I would put this in as one of the top five shows I have ever seen – and I’m sure you will too. Motley Crue on tour now with special guest Alice Cooper, find your tickets to the Final Tour HERE!
