On a peaceful Thursday night, grunge band Orange Mayfield shook up The Mint in Los Angeles! A cool, underground rock venue, The Mint hosts an array of unique artists within its doors. Orange Mayfield livened the evening with their Nirvana-esque sound and influence, partnered with a dazzling lightshow of color and pattern.
To give some background on this unique group, Orange Mayfield began in late 2014 when vocalist Russ Taylor discussed his visions of starting a psychedelic grunge rock band with guitarist Josh Rubin. Having spent the past decade on an entirely different genre (hip hop), Orange Mayfield was a brand new musical endeavor for Russ. However, Josh loved the ideas and wanted to collaborate further. When Josh began to layer Russ’s songs with his dramatic guitar style and emotional backing vocals, they both knew they were on to something special. Amidst this creative process, Ryan Bartlette found his way into the band on bass. Ryan provided the low end that the band needed with a percussive approach to his bass lines. Upon the band’s completion of their first album in the winter of 2015 (entitled FLOUR), the group was faced with the challenge of finding a permanent drummer that could add the energy their original compositions needed. Orange Mayfield found that in Tim Falco, who joined the band in the spring of 2016. With Tim’s musical background circling around rock, the drums on FLOUR are a testament to Tim’s passion for writing both intricate and complementary percussion.
The set list at The Mint showcased each member’s unique talent, as highlighted in their aforementioned biography. When musicians from various experiences mesh so perfectly, a unique sound (and vision) is born. The sound at the venue was absolutely spot on, as was the marvelous light show that set the tone for each melody. Vocalist Russ Taylor sung each song with immense talent and skill, the passion could be heard unmistakably. Bassist Ryan Bartlette really rocked out on his side of the stage, swaying with each passing beat! Guitarist Josh Rubin highlighted his infamous guitar style, noticeably playing with quite a fervor. Drummer Tim Falco absolutely rocked out behind his kit, with an energy that could easily be felt by any audience member witnessing the show!
