INTERVIEW: SMILE EMPTY SOUL

QV3_4800RockRevolt Magazine photojournalist Anabel DFlux caught up with Smile Empty Soul recently for a quick interview- chatting about the tour, the upcoming album, and musical inspirations.

Hello! Thank you so much for talking with me today. How are you feeling about your upcoming tour? Some big bands on the bill!

I’m feeling good about the tour, it’s gonna be fun. All the bands are reputable and have been doing this a long time so I’m sure it will be a smooth run.

You’re touring in support of your sixth album, Chemicals. What do you want the fans to know about this record?

I want them to know that we had a blast making this record, and that it’s our most developed and mature recording to date.

Who did the artwork for Chemicals? I’m really digging the paint textures and cool colors.

Jake, Ryan, and I (Sean) painted everything. It was just another way for us to really enjoy the process of making this record.

What was the inspiration behind your most recent album?CHEMICALS COVER FINAL

We’re inspired by life and music. We love making music whether it’s recording or playing live, and it’s not usually hard to find inspiration.

Being in the industry for so long, how have you all grown and changed throughout the years?

We’ve changed as individuals, as a collective, as musicians, players, writers, basically in every way. It’s been 11 years now since our first record came out, and it’s impossible not to change in that amount of time.

What would you say was your proudest moment as a band?

We’ve had a lot of great moments that I’m very proud of, but I think just sticking through all the hardship and remaining a band for 6 albums and 11 years is what I’m most proud of.

What has been your favorite music video to shoot- and why? Another one in the works?

I think I had the most fun making the “Bottom of the Bottle” video because we just gathered our friends as the extra’s and had fun with it.  Being our first video experience, it was special. These days, making an expensive video as a rock band is a complete waste, so we just make our own videos. We are kicking around the idea of making a cool video for our song “Sitting Ducks,” but we’ll have to see if it pans out.

You’ve done a slew of impressive tours! What has been the most interesting touring experience thus far? Share the story!

There are too many experiences to pick just one, but I can definitely say that the road never ceases to amaze me, and no matter how long we do this, it always throws new unexpected curve balls at you. That’s part of the beauty of it.

How do festivals differ from regular tours?

They’re different in every way, Both great and fun, but nothing beats playing an outdoor stage in front of 10’s of thousands of people
