The Death Metal band, Illdisposed, was formed in 1991 by the vocalist Bo Summer in Aarhus, Denmark. The band has changed its formation a few times over the years and the most recent incarnation was completed in 2013 consisting of Bo Summer (Vocals), Jakob Batten (Guitar), Ken Holst (Guitar), Kussen (Bass) and Kim Langkjær Jensen (Drums).
Since the band’s first demo they have been rock n’ rolling so hard they got the attention of Nuclear Blast producers with whom they got a recording deal soon after that.
This year the band released their latest studio album, With The Lost Souls On Our Side, with Massacre Records and we at RockRevolt were more than ecstatic for the chance to chat with them.
Hi Guys. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me. How’s the new CD going so far?
It’s going pretty well. Tons of good reviews and a chart entry here in Denmark as well.
Excellent. I’m sure that’s a great feeling. How did it feel to be realizing your 11th studio album?
It’s crazy! It feels weird to think about it. Where did all these years go? It makes me feel kind of old. But it has been great times all the way.
Did you all know, since the formation of the band was going to be so successful and last so many years?
No. I remember several times I was talking to Bo in the studio, and we were saying to each other that this might be one of our last releases. But then again, watching people like Lemmy and the guys from Judas Priest, you realize that it’s possible to go on if the will is still there.
What has changed in ILLDISPOSED musically over your career? What hasn’t changed?
We’ve become better musicians and better songwriters. We’ve gone from just piling a bunch of riffs on top of each other, to focusing on writing a good song that’s got personality. But the basics in our sound hasn’t changed much. It’s still the same groovy kind of death metal as it was 20 years ago.
What’s the creative process like?
Most times the songs just pop up in my head. Then I record the song in my studio and send mp3s to the other guys. Bo will then write the lyrics. That’s basically how it works.
Which song of the new album you think could represent the whole album and how?
“The Way We Choose” or “A Dreaded Pursuer”. It’s a pretty mixed album; some songs are slow, some are mid tempo and some are fast. I think these two songs have a little bit of everything: groove, brutality and melody.
How and who came up with this new album title With The Lost Souls On Our Side? Is there a story behind this title?
It’s actually a song title off our first album Four Depressive Seasons. We didn’t come up with the title until the album was recorded. We just thought the feeling of the songs were like in the good old days, so Bo suggested that title, and we all thought it was a great idea.
Are you guys currently on tour for this new album or have plans to?
We’re just playing a couple of festivals at the moment, most of the clubs are closed during the festival season. We’re planning a European tour in November. Unfortunately we haven’t had any luck getting to the U.S. It seems to be impossible to tour over there without paying to play.
If you weren’t musicians, what other career would you pursue?
I’ve already got a career in IT infra-structure. We can’t make a living through our music, so we’ve all got 9-5 jobs besides the band.
What was the coolest place you have ever played at?
The coolest stage was either Wacken Open Air or With Full Force, both in Germany. There were so many people there. The coolest country we’ve played was New Zealand. That country is just amazing.
If you could play anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
I’ve heard good and funny stories about Asian countries. So China and Japan probably. The fans should be crazy over there. And like I said, we have been trying several times to get to the U.S. Hopefully that will happen soon.
