INTERVIEW: CROBOT

Crobot-BannerThe legend of the spaceborne killer made the front page today!

One of our favorite bands, Crobot is self described as “Dirty. Groove. Rock.” We wholeheartedly agree! Others may compare them to other bands, but Crobot has a sound that is unique and unparalleled.

Nobody knows where he came from, why he’s here, or what he’ll do to you.

Regardless of where they came from, they are here. They are loud and proud. They are irreverent and unconventional, and we cannot seem to get enough of them!

With their debut Something Supernatural releasing just last year, Crobot is poising themselves to be the pioneers of bringing soul back to metal music. They are the answer to prayers of those that have been poisoned by overpolished and overwrought fake music that is being cranked out cookie-cutter style to fit the mold of the status quo. Just like the Spaceborne Killer, we may not know why they are here or what they’ll do…but whatever it is, it is definitely going to be something cosmically amazing.

I was doing some minor Crobot stalking. I was looking at your site, and I’m totally digging that you all have a selfie with Ron Jeremy.

Brandon: Where did we do that at? Kansas City?

Yeah, it was Kansas City.

Brandon: It was pretty awesome…

You crossed that one off your bucket list.

Bishop: He was at a festival and Jake was like, “We gotta get a picture with him!” So we walked up there, and he was on some big platform, with some porno chicks, showing their boobs. It was pretty awkward, but we went up there and we got a picture with him. He was in a whole different world. It was pretty funny!

I guess if you are Ron Jeremy you are always in a different world.

Paul: The porn world!

The “porn world”! It’s unlike any other world! So you are headlining the Drunk As Shit tour. So on a scale of one to ten, how drunk are you right now?

Bishop: Zero

Zero?

Brandon: I think all the guys got done smoking a big joint. No one has started drinking…yet. It’s definitely going to happen though.

Great, I was also stalking your Facebook, and its apparently Chad Nicefield’s birthday. You got some fuckery plans tonight?   Can you describe?

Bishop: Yeah, his girlfriend got him a massage.

Paul: A good massage!

Bishop: Yeah! His girlfriend ordered a massage – some dude to come and massage his body for him. It was a surprise!

Was he pleasantly surprised?

Brandon: He said he wished he had known, because he would have washed his body first.

Nice! So Wilson is kind of wild, as are all of you. Have there been any interesting shenanigans in your travels that you care to mention?

Jake: There’s definitely been interesting shenanigans, but I don’t know if I care to mention them all though. (laughs) A paddle was involved in some of it though!

A paddle?

Jake: Oh yes! There was a paddling.

Oh my! I will have to ask about this paddle when you come back to Louisville!

Brandon: There is also video evidence of some drunken shenanigans that we had while we were with those guys at Shiprocked. It’s kind of “seven minutes of debauchery”. (laughs)

Oh my goodness! I’m going to have to dig that one up. With just your debut album, how you keeping it fresh night after night? I mean you guys are touring hectically.

Bishop: We’ve played a bunch of new songs on this run. I think that definitely helps.

Brandon: It’s what we do!

Gotcha! You toured in Europe and you did Shiprocked. Now you are doing your headline tour. Does your gear change between writing and recording in different venues?

Bishop: For me, on the guitar stuff, I’m always going through different pedals and trying different things. I try out different busses, which doesn’t make too much of a difference, but my tonality changes. For the most part, we’ve kept with the same brands of amps and guitars that we’ve been playing and recorded the album with. The sound does stay consistent. It’s cool to experiment with different tones and such though.

Travelling overseas versus touring here, and also playing on a ship, does it change at all in those different areas?

Bishop: When we go out on a ship or when we do festivals overseas, sometimes, we can’t use our exact amp, but they will have something comparable. Whereas I’m usually using Orange amps, sometimes they will have Marshall backline, or something. Sometimes it’s just more convenient to use what they have provided for us. We usually bring our own guitars and pedal boards, and stuff like that

I interviewed you all at Louder than Life last year, and you all described Something Supernatural as all of Black Sabbath fucking George Clinton – an experience that will make my underparts feel special.

Crobot: [laughter]

It’s getting close to a year, since its release. You said you are playing new stuff now, so, tell me how the new stuff is going to make my underparts feel equally as tingly?

Crobot: [Laughter]

Jake: You ever see the Howard Stern movie?

Yes. Private Parts?

Paul: Yeah, I don’t know what that has to do with it.

Crobot: [Laughter]

(laughs) That movie did not do it for my undercarriage, no.

Brandon: I think the songs are a little different, but they still sound like Crobot. For me, I think they have a little more feeling to them. Some are a little more “happy go lucky”, whereas others are a little bit darker. Yeah. I think they are something that Crobot fans will really dig. It’s not really anything different but it is different. It’s still Crobot.

In terms of longevity, you are a relatively new band. What do you attribute your rise to success? I mean, so many bands out there would give their bass player just to get the acclaim that you are receiving.

Jake: What you trying to say here?!

Bishop: I think it’s that we are just always working hard at whatever we are doing, whether its touring, or writing. We don’t really have time off per se; it’s something that we are passionate about doing all the time. Luckily we are able to wake up every day, have shows, and we get to fulfil that. I think that is what it comes down to: it’s just showing up and putting everything in to it.

Ok, do you ever experience any sense of burn out?

Brandon: Oh yeah! It depends on the amount of sleep you get. There are definitely a lot of factors involved, but I don’t think we ever get burned out of playing per se. Our bodies might tell us no, but we are definitely playing regardless.

We interview you all the time apparently, at least three times a year. Late last year, Brandon said that, music was “cookie cutter ten years ago” and that you felt that it still has that same formula. You feel like things really do need to be shaken up, whether it is now or another ten years from now. You feel that we’re in the disco era right now.” Can you expound on your definition of disco?

Brandon: You have this music that is popular for some reason, shape, or form, and it’s all the same. It all sounds the same. In the 70’s, at least disco was cool – it had cool grooves. Now we have this electronic music. Maybe it’s just that I don’t get it, but I think that things are going to sway in a different direction because there are a lot of people out there that are just fed up with the fake computer noises, you know? There are going to be some rock and rollers born out of this era because it’s different now. It’s different to see people playing their instruments. It seems that people are ready for real again. Rock and roll isn’t always perfect and that is what’s cool about it.

Exactly! When I’ve done album reviews, I’ve down-scored because it felt too over-processed – too much stuff was mixed out of it and it just kind of lost the soul. You’ve set your bar pretty high, and as far as the direction music is taking, I’ve noticed that things are moving into the musical style you are playing now. With new bands coming along using the same type of strategy, how do you feel Crobot is going to adapt going forward?

Brandon: With the new stuff, the sound is evolving into something even more on its own. We are spreading ourselves to the end of the spectrum and digging in a little deeper.

Tell me more about the new stuff. I haven’t been to a new concert so, what should I expect from the new songs?

Jake: There are a couple that are faster paced – keep your heart revving, riding that lightning! There are some that are really, really stony, as well as some in between!

Bishop: We are trying to you peel out those tunes that are really going to make the most impact for the next album.

Paul: We have a lot of ideas to mull over.

At this point you are just testing out new stuff.

Bishop: We don’t really know if these songs will make the album, or if the songs are the way the songs will be when we record them. I’m sure things will change, but we just like to try things out, throw them into the fire, see how people like them, and see how they feel live.

Jake: We don’t really care if it’s definitely going to be on the album. It’s just something for us to do to keep playing new stuff.

Ok. Any big successes? Any panty droppers out there that the ladies are just going crazy over?

Jake: Yeah.

Crobot: [laughter]

Very deep! Thanks for expounding. I stalked your Instagram. I noticed there was a little GIF in there that was interesting. Tell me, how often you fantasize about putting your dick in Nick Cage? Also, whether or not you felt sexy wearing the lipstick?

Crobot: [laugher]

Bishop: I don’t know if it’s so much of fantasy, so much of sub-conscious instinct. It doesn’t know that it’s looking for the life giving colostrum, the teet that it suckles upon. It just knows to go there. Very much like the future burial grounds of THE Nicholas Cage, our dicks are drawn to it. It is our teet.

(laughs) I am sorry! If I had a dick, Nick would not be the one I would want to put it in, I am just saying.

Brandon: You didn’t see Face Off?

There is just something about Nicholas Cage -he looks like he smells bad.

Brandon: I know! Isn’t it so hot?

No, no, foul odors are NOT sexy, no. With all this running around and touring, and what not, how do you all unwind?

Jake: We smoke a couple of joints.

Or put your dick in Nick Cage.

Bishop: Well, we don’t know him yet. It’s in process. I hang out with my dog! He is a great listener. Sometimes I dress him up.

You all are going to be on the Motorhead’s Motorboat tour? So how awesome is that? I’d be ecstatic. I mean, it’s Motorhead!

Brandon: It’s pretty cool. It’s an awesome lineup! CofC is going, and I’m really excited to see them. Also our buddies Kyng. It’s going to be a lot of fun with them.

And you’ve played with some huge bands over the past couple of years. Which bands did you fangasm over the most and which bands have you not played with that will totally make your bucket list?

Bishop: We would love to play with Graveyard. That would be awesome; fantastic.

Brandon: Yeah I think that is our band crush at the moment, as far as wanting to tour with those guys. They are a great new band. There are a lot of others, too, but probably Graveyard is number one on the list. We’ve been lucky to have been on lot of awesome tours. All of them have been really great.

Did you learn anything from the bands? Any dos or don’ts, just by observation?

Jake: Don’t be a douche, I guess. It’s hard to say.

Brandon: There is this just a professionalism out there that lot of bands carry about them, which is cool to see, especially when you are a younger band. I think you pick up on stuff like that. There is time and place to be a loud obnoxious idiot sometimes. Other than that, it’s just rock and roll!

WARNING!!!! – FROM HERE ON OUT IT GETS WEIRD

Very good, that is actually my last question. Do you have any questions for me?

Bishop: We totally had a question ready for this! Would you ever let somebody pee on you in a shower? Like us pee on you in the shower?

Jake: In the shower, because you can use the soap afterwards.

Oh, will I let you pee on me in the shower? It’s almost like a win-win isn’t it?

Brandon: Yes, it is! Good answer!

Thank you. Come to think about it, didn’t we do that at Louder than Life last year? I am pretty sure we did at some point. I don’t remember much what happened at Louder than Life, but I do remember you all were there.

Bishop: We probably had our pants off.

No. I remember you all jumped a fence. I think you had your pants on. I do remember the tour manager Carlitos had a hat…that’s about it.

Bishop: Yes. He is a hard man to forget.

Jake: You should see his balls. They are so HUGE.

So you have seen his balls? Did you all pee on Carlitos in the shower?

Jake: No! No… it wasn’t in the shower.

Bishop: He was showing them to everyone, so I spit on them.

Very nice! He sounds like a classy man, he really does.

Jake: I got peed on by Bishop once.

I think you all have a golden shower fetish.

Bishop: No! No! It’s part of the whole instinct thing. Remember the whole teet conversation? It’s the same thing as with Nicholas Cage, the peeing on somebody. It’s a one-time thing. We can’t tell you why!

I get it! It just has to happen. You know, I am a firm believer in trying everything at least once. Because, you just don’t know if you won’t like it.

Paul: Yeah. Except for like heroin. You don’t have to try that out.

I think there are enough case studies to prove that that is a bad one. But I don’t know, getting peed on by Crobot in the shower, it just might be a magical moment.

Brandon: Well, we do travel quite a bit, so if you want to give us the opportunity, we certainly could!
