Blending alternative hard rock with the rhythmic and uncompromising intensity of metal, Los Angeles-based Zero Theorem has drawn early comparisons to Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, and Tool. Their first single “Area” has steadily climbed the Active Rock radio charts since late 2017 and has recently jumped into the Top 40. The song is growing rapidly, with recent adds to Spotify’s Rock Hard playlist, Apple Music’s Breaking Hard Rock playlist, and Google Play Music’s Hard Rock Hotlist Radio channel, among others.
Caesar took some time to do a little Q and A session with us check it out:
RR: Caesar, how is it going tonight man?
Caesar: Its going great.
RR: Let’s talk about what we are hear to talk about. You guys are doing well with “Area” at Rock Radio, your current single off of your upcoming debut EP, Ataraxis
Caesar: Yes sir, we are very excited about it.
RR: Why “Area” what made you choose is as your first single.
Caesar: We felt like it was a good starter to get people to know what type of band we are going to be. Ut touches on a lot of our influences whether it be hard rock or metal, or some experimental. We felt like it was a good opener to let people know what we are about.
RR: You mentioned the genres that influenced you guy, what bands from those genres had the most influence.
Caesar: Bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains with some Pantera, Metallica and Sabbath all mixed in there.
RR: There seems to have some industrial metal sounds in there as well.
Caesar: Yeah, we are inspired by some progressive acts as well as experimental.
RR: You are releasing Ataraxis on May 4th, 2018. What are your plans to support the album, touring and such?
Caesar: Ataraxis will be a 6 track EP, and we are looking at getting on some tours around Sothern California and Vegas and hoping to get out to the Midwest.
RR: Why don’t you tell us a little about the formation of Zero Theorem.
Caesar: It started as a collaboration between my cousin Joe and I. We were shooting digital files back and forth between where I was at in Chicago and where he was at in L.A., and I realized that we had something so I wanted to pursue it so I went out to Los Angeles. In the last year or so we got the current amalgamation of the band where it is Max on guitar, Jake on drums, Eloy on bass and I am on the vocals with my cousin Joe behind the scenes.
RR: So, with you moving to L.A. how was it adjusting to the new surroundings while trying to put a band together
Caesar: There are a lot of transplants out there so the others around you are going through or have gone through the same adjustments you are going through so that helps. It does not take long to get with your musician friends and start to network and things come together and that’s kind of where we are now.
RR: With Ataraxis coming out May 14th, who handled the writing process, what was that like
Caesar: Joe and I would just start off with a track and we would send stuff back and forth until we get to a draft we are happy with then we bring it into our producer and he starts to work his magic and we allstart to through around ideas. During that process we are asking Max and Eloy and Jake for their expertise as well.
RR: Sounds like you guys have a nice cohesiveness going and are doing what is best for the band
Caesar: Yes sir, absolutely.
RR: Well Caesar, I thank you for taking the time out of your evening to talk with us and best of luck on the release of Ataraxis on May 14th.
Zero Theorem initially developed as a cross-country collaboration between cousins Caesar (based in Chicago) and Joe Scarlotti (Los Angeles), who began writing songs by sending digital files to one another. As their creative partnership developed, Caesar relocated to LA to further his musical ambitions. They recorded the initial ZT demos in 2017. Then, through word of mouth and networking in the Los Angeles music scene, the band came together with guitarist Max Georgiev, bassist Eloy Palacios, and drummer Jake Hayden.
The demos were honed into finished songs with producer Kane Churko(Papa Roach, Five Finger Death Punch, In This Moment). Caesar says “Kane is immeasurably talented and has made us better songwriters by helping to emphasize our strengths and explore new territory.”
The band has gained notoriety quickly as a live act by performing with Doyle, Hed PE, Art Of Dying, and Motograter, among others.
Zero Theorem’s sound, says Caesar “is groove metal with big melodies and some progressive material mixed in. Heavy music itself is a lifestyle choice, and we strive to embody that with both substance and wit.”
