We certainly love us some good female fronted rock bands, and Silversyde satiates our thirst for both. Described as “Beauty and Gravel” these guys wield their talent like a mace: authoritative and solid. Their melodic rocks hits home, with messages that both enlighten and leave you craving more. They are out and about, actively touring, and coming to bring their brand and message to you. Catch them on the Extreme Tour for the rest of this month!
“Our calling is to show people a way through the stress and troubles of life that plague our everyday existence.”
Can we get a Hell YEAH! to that!? We had a quick chat with Laura Juliano, lead singer of SILVERSYDE, about the life of an indie band. We are more than proud to introduce our Indie Band of the Week: SILVERSYDE!!!
What music and life experiences have influenced your music the most?
Our music has been influenced buy numerous artists we love, ie. RED, Flyleaf, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle. Our lyrics have come from personal experience in my life personally. Stories of struggle, pain, heartbreak, loss, but above all love overcoming all obstacles.
You are from Toledo OH. Tell us about the music scene there. Is your musical style filling a need for music?
The band is based in Toledo, OH but it originated in upstate NY. The scene is okay for our genre in NY but when we started getting radio play midwest/west coast we started touring the country and never looked back. We have never actually played in Toledo because we are never around funny enough.
What have been some of the struggles you’ve experienced as an indie band?
Our band goes through typical touring issues: breaking down, low on gas money etc. But we’ve thankfully never had any real issues. We’ve got A LOT of stories that would make you cringe though.
What are some of the advantages of being an indie band?
Being “Indie” doesn’t really phase us and we don’t think about it often. I guess it comes with a freedom though, musically, creatively and financially.
Is there any song in your set list that really sticks out, that has a special meaning to you?
We do have a song coming out on our new album that is a crowd favorite it seems. It is dedicated to anyone who has ever lost anyone to suicide or has faced depression personally. It tends to strike a chord with crowds and we get the most personal response after we get off stage. It means a lot that fans can relate because that is where I came from and a demon that seems to turn up every so often. I just have to be reminded that life is worth living and that I am worth fighting for.
What so far has been your absolute favorite show? Any your looking forward to?
I don’t think that we have a “favorite” show. Every chance we get to play for crowds big or small we have a blast!
In what direction do you see your music going?
Our music is headed in a heavier direction both lyrically and musically.
Who’s idea was it to use online media to gain so much of your band’s exposure?
I originally started the web presence for Silversyde, but I have to give credit to my wonderful band mates for building interaction and maintaining relationships with our fans. It’s a group effort that I could never do alone!
What have you learned so far as an indie artist that you wish you had known when you first started out?
There are always things that you wish you’d known, like, how much time, effort and money it takes to be a band and tour. But everything that hard work brings is worth it. It’s not for the weak hearted for sure!
What advice do you have for other indie bands?
Our advice to other bands is to make sure you are ready to fight for what you are doing in an overly saturated industry that wants to tear you apart, and then work hard booking, making connections and staying grounded.
