INDIE BAND OF THE WEEK: VALORA

This week at RockRevolt, we talked to Syd Duran, the driving force behind the band Valora.

After rising to success on Sirius/XM Octane with their single “I Waited For You,” and their collaboration on Breaking Benjamin’s “Blow Me Away” remix, the band is gearing up to release their debut album in the fall.

How has the response to the video for “React” been? Why did you choose to collaborate with Mot & Krid?

The responses I’ve received have been very touching; more than I even anticipated. I’ve had several people write personal messages to me saying “That’s exactly how I feel!” It’s amazing to know that something I helped create has inspired people to take a stand for what they believe in, and be proud of who they are. I’m completely happy with the response.

The collaboration with Mot & Krid was completely unexpected. I was hired by Decca/Universal Records to record vocals on David Garrett’s “Bring Me To Life” remix. The recording session took place at Thomas Gallmeier’s (Mot & Krid) studio. A few weeks after the session, Thomas called me and asked if I’d be interested in a writing session. We wrote and recorded many songs very quickly and knew that we could be a powerful writing team. Now he is one of my favorite co-writers and producers. We thought it would be fun to have him join us on stage for some live shows as well as the music video for “React”.

How has your sound evolved since “I Waited For You” in 2011? How would you describe your sound in general?

Since 2011 we’ve drawn inspiration from many different genres outside the walls of rock to create a hybrid sound. I like to describe it as “a female-fronted Linkin Park hosting a rock n’ roll dance party.”

What image do you want your music to convey?

My goal in making music is to move people in a way that words alone cannot. So the image we want to convey is that of hope and motivation fueled by waves of positive energy.

Who are your influences and how have they shaped your sound?

My major vocal influences include Chrissie Hynde, Jack White, Matt Bellamy, Chris Cornell and of course, Amy Lee. Although they come from different generations and genres, each one has inspired my vocal style and desire to strengthen and stretch my range to be the best singer I can be.

When will we finally receive the debut album? What can we expect when it is released?

The album will drop Fall 2015. You can expect lots of live shows and, of course, a new music video for the next single.

How do you handle being a female fronted band in a male dominated industry?

I don’t really do things based on the fact that I am a female. I don’t expect any breaks or special treatment on account of my gender. I just give 100 percent to the music I make because that’s what I hope and expect to get in return.

What do you think of the music industry right now?

I think the music industry right now can be everything you want it to be if you take matters into your own hands, work your ass off while creating opportunities everywhere you go, and always provide greatness for your fans, because that’s what they deserve.

What can we expect next?

We are about to launch our Pledge Music campaign which is an amazing opportunity for fans to be a major part of the release and marketing plan for our new album. When the campaign goes live, fans can pledge various amounts that will go directly to the release of our music. In return they will receive exclusive/limited edition items and opportunities only available through Pledge Music.

What is your most memorable moment from being in the band to date?

I’d have to say the collaboration on Breaking Benjamin’s “Blow Me Away” remix had to be the most memorable. It was not only an incredible opportunity but a fun and controversial conversation starter for just about all my interviews following the “Break up of Breaking Benjamin.” Which most people now know that I had nothing to do with the falling out of the original members and lead singer of the band, but I definitely got caught in the crossfire.

What is the inspiration behind the band name?

“Valora” is the name of a bad ass female pirate. It represents Valor and empowerment.

What is next for the band?

We are setting up a tour (details to come) to support the new album after its release this Fall.
