Better Than Grey is a Pop Punk band from Sofia, Bulgaria that formed in 2010. Their goals are centered around trying to make quality music with no compromises. They are always looking for a good melody with interesting arrangements and lyrics that are meaningful. They have been performing in local clubs and have played internationally in Italy, Czech Republic, Greece, Poland and various European countries. They are currently working on promoting their 2011 debut album and hoping to headline a tour. So check out Better Than Grey, this week’s Indie Band of the Week!
Who are you and what is your role in the band?
I’m Justin and I am the frontman of the band. I do most of the music, lyrics and song arrangements. The rest of the guys are Franx and Marin (guitar players), Map To (bass) and Asen (drums)
How did the band get started?
We were established in 2008 after our original bands split up. The original members and I decided to change directions and go with something new and fresh like pop punk, which was very popular at the time. This is how Better Than Grey was established. Actually, there is nothing interesting or extraordinary about our beginning. Sorry about that!
Who are your influences and how do they play a role in your sound?
Well, in the beginning we were very influenced by Fall Out Boy, All Time Low, New Found Glory, Four Year Strong: the bands with typical pop punk presence and sound. After couple of years we already dug Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce The Veil, A Day To Remember and Bring Me The Horizon. Actually, all these bands did not influence our sound, but the way we feel and think about music. They were like different lessons for us and I hope they made us a better musicians. We are grateful for having such a good role models and are holding great respect for what they’ve done and will do in the future.
What has been your most meaningful experience being in this band so far?
I can describe it with only three words: Love, Friendship and Memories!
Favorite memory from a show you’ve played or a place you’ve travelled?
We toured Europe two times and of course it was awesome. I don’t know about the other guys in the band, but my favorite memories are the beer glasses I’ve stolen from every single club we’ve played to remind me of these great times forever. I hope the owners didn’t notice who robbed them.
What do you hope to accomplish with your music?
Just like any musician, our initial dreams and desires were to be noticed and signed by a “big label”. However, the world’s economy crisis and the collapse of the musical industry made these dreams next to impossible to fulfill. So right now, we’re simply trying to make some good tunes and gather more friends and fans like you.
Something about you that no one knows?
I’m bold which is why I’m always wearing hats. Don’t tell anyone.
What is next for the band?
Making some new songs and recording them. That will be enough for now.
