The genre of metalcore is one whose roster just seems to get bigger and bigger. I’m not sure if the labels are signing up bands left and right because of the popularity of the genre in order to cash in on it or not. It bears an uncanny resemblance to what was happening in the late 80s with labels signing “hair bands.” It tends to over saturate the market, thus making the genre grow stale.
2013 already has new entries in that ever growing genre. I Call You Legion have just thrown their hats into the musical ring by unleashing their self-titled debut EP onto the world. The band consists of Stuart Sloan on lead vocals, Trevor Goin on guitar, Matthew Hodges on guitar, William Hodges on bass and Kaleb Allen on drums. This L.A. based band is determined to make a name for themselves for all the right reasons and their EP may just allow them to do so.
This release may be short on quantity (it’s an EP), but it’s heavy on quality. The opener “Song 4” is heavy and contains some creative riffs. It will definitely grab your attention and make you want to stick around for track number two. I think that’s where things really get interesting. “The Maher Method” is a sick track and I hope this is one the band brings to their live show. The riffs are in abundance and it’s a powerful, driving song. The band also has some very interesting audio clips sampled into the song which are quite interesting.
“Wretch Like Me” is also another interesting piece with many layers to it. This track is a bit more melodic and the addition of clean vocals on it also adds a dimension to the song that’s not in the other tracks. The clean vocals also show up in the last track “Sun Stand Still”. The track is still heavy, as are the riffs, and shows great potential for this up and coming band. As track five came to a close, I found myself wanting to hear track six, but that was the end.
Overall, I think is a very solid debut EP and it’s full of surprises. I have to say, if you like heavy riffs, this will not disappoint you. They band throws some progressive elements in as well when it comes to the guitar work and those caught me off guard. I wasn’t expecting that at all and it adds a great richness to their songs. This is a great debut effort and I hope it gets heard by the masses because it deserves to be. This may just be a band that we all need to keep an eye on.
