When you are cofounder of a band that is as goofy as New York City-based thrashers Anthrax, 30 plus years of shenanigans certainly leads to some great stories that must be told to the masses. Speaking Words in Glasgow features Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian captivating a Scottish crowd for over two hours. He outlines various encounters he has had with notable names such as Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead), Dimebag Darrell (Pantera), Gene Simmons (Kiss), and others. The DVD, which was funded by a PledgeMusic campaign started by Ian himself, gives metal fans from all walks of life a behind the scenes look at the experiences of one of thrash’s biggest names.
To the point, I thoroughly enjoyed Speaking Words. As I watched it in full for the first time, I was drawn to Ian’s storytelling method – straight forward and easy to follow. He is clear in his intent and the show, which was unrehearsed, flows throughout. A side note – this should be obvious, but with an alternate title that openly includes “swearing words”, I would not recommend watching this at a fairly high volume with your windows wide open during the afternoon hours. I hope my neighbors found his stories as funny as I did.
If you are on the fence about whether or not you’re going to grab Speaking Words when it ‘s finally released, I would strongly consider checking it out. The stories are unparalleled, and while there are no flashing lights, smoke machines, or anything similar of the sort, sometimes a bad ass motherfucker with a microphone is all you need – which is certainly the case this time around.
Speaking Words in Glasgow is out Nov. 13th via Megaforce Records.
