Soulfly
With Shattered Sun and Soilwork
Things got rowdy at Portland Oregon’s Hawthorne Theatre when Soulfly brought their We Sold Our Souls To Metal tour. Shattered Sun and Soilwork, along with Portland’s own Path To Ruin and Chronological Injustice opened up the gig, with RockRevolt magazine photojournalist Terry White right there in the mosh. Polish death metal band Decapitated was also on the ticket, but due to logistical issues, they were not available to play Portland.
This was my first time seeing the legendary Max Cavalera, co-founder of black metal pioneer band Sepultura and it was non-stop headbanging mayhem from the first thump of the kick drum to the close of the second encore. Hot on the tails of their 2015 album release, Archangel, Soulfly delivered a palpable, visceral assault which had myself and fellow Portland metalheads thrashing non-stop for a full two hours. Although Max’s days with Sepultura are long behind him, it’s clear that Soulfly will be rocking the tribe for a long time coming.
