P.O.D.
With Vanity Kills, Amerikan Overdose and Islander
The Hawthorne Theatre in Portland got its walls rocked when P.O.D. and friends came to town. Hometown openers When Vanity Kills kicked things off. The guitar work was incredible and Heidi’s vocals were on point. Their melodic hard rock sound could easily appeal to audiences in a multitude of different genres as they poured through a solid set.
The second act on the bill was Amerikan Overdose, also from Portland, OR. I hadn’t prepared myself for the sensory overload that had gripped me from the opening of their set. As if pulled into a trance, I stared, mouth agape, at the spectacle just 12 inches from my face. Amerikan Overdose is proof that Industrial metal is alive in the northwest. I wish them luck on their east coast tour in support of Mushroomhead.
The pace slowed down a bit for Islander as they took the stage with their rap/reggae-metal sound. Although many have compared Mikey Carvajal’s voice to other vocalists such as Jonathan Davis of Korn, or Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit, I find that the comparison to Chad Grey of Mudvayne would be the most accurate. On stage, Mikey didn’t have any reservations calling out the Portland crowd saying “This would be a lot more fun if we act like we’re at a rock show.” By the time Islander finished their set, the crowd was rocking and swaying right along with them.
When P.O.D. finally took the stage, it was standing room only in the packed Hawthorne Theatre. Bodies filled the floor and it was wall to wall thrashing for the entire set. Amerikan Overdose even joined the crowd with Starbie, Cody, and Brick kicking asses in the mosh. P.O.D. played the Hawthorne with so much energy and adrenaline, they could have brought down the house in an 80,000 seat arena. Several songs from their triple platinum album Satellite, as well as a good mix of lesser familiar songs kept the show rockin’ at a breakneck pace for the entire set. Thanks P.O.D. for bringin’ it in Portland!
