By now we have all seen the videos of three African American children playing heavy metal music in the streets of New York. Well, let’s just say they have done a lot of growing up physically and musically. Malcolm Brickhouse (vocals/guitar), Jarad Dawkins (Drums), Alec Atkins (Bass) were those three kids, and now those three talented young men are known as Unlocking the Truth. These young men’s popularity has been out of the ordinary, having the opportunity to open for legends such as Guns N’ Roses, Motorhead, Living Colour, and Marilyn Manson. I have been a witness to the magic these guys produce on stage at this past Carolina Rebellion, where some people knew who they were, then by the end of their set EVERYONE knew about them. They were the talk of the day with David Draiman of Disturbed watching offstage. This was done without an album, and here we are. The release of their debut album, Chaos, with super tracks, “Monster” and “Take Control”. Throughout this whole album, the guitar riffs are in your face. They may be children in number of years, but there is nothing child-like from any of their music. Malcolm Brickhouse turns in a great vocal performance, and he definitely has the potential to be mentioned with names such as Slash and Zakk Wylde when it comes to his guitar ability right now. Jarad Dawkins’ drum playing was within himself and hard hitting; he had the perfect style for this album. Of course you cannot forget Alec Atkins, who I viewed to be the MVP for this band; his bass playing brought the whole album experience together. He definitely did his job and did it very well when it came to complementing a dynamic guitarist and drummer such as Malcolm and Jarad. The creativity, the breakdowns, the lyrics, and song structures makes this album a must listen to anyone who is a heavy metal fan. Outside of “Take Control” and “Monster”, some other songs to watch are “Made of Stone”, which, outside of the two singles, is my favorite song on the album. It’s a different feel from the rest of the album and shows off their ability to write a slow temp song. Another song to watch is “A Tide”; the lyrics to this song are relatable to everyone, no matter how different we may all be in life. “Ravens” is also a song to watch; it has potential to become a huge hit, especially if played live. The future of heavy metal looks bright thanks to Unlocking the Truth.
