Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new genre to present to the world of metal. It is known as Goblin Core. “What sort of asinine name for a genre is that?”, I hear in the crowd of readers who are obviously perplexed at the meaning of the term. There’s no confusion here. It’s just a group of six people in the metal world singing about goblins. Otherwise known as Nekrogoblikon, from the filthy goblin hollows of LA, they are bringing forward their goblin filth in the form of their third album, Heavy Meta. And I don’t mean that in a bad way.

Lyrically, you can guess it’s going to be pretty stupid from the start, not in terms of listening to something try-hardy, but by someone who’s openly mockingly singing about goblins for the fun of it. Musically, it’s absolutely stunning. The guitar segments from Alex Alerza and Joe Nelson form together seamlessly, with Scorpion’s vocals cutting through the record. From the offshoot of “The End of Infinity”, there’s a carnival-esque theme running throughout, with Aaron Minich’s keyboards dueling with the lead guitars. The track that sums up the near-silliness of the band is most apparent in “Bring us More”, with Brandon Frenzel’s bass lines going completely awol, bringing in a perfect symphonic chorus, keyboard and gang vocals galore. Some of the best musical pieces on this album are the guitar and the keyboard dueling, which is very apparent on “Atlantis”, where the solos just shine through, building up for a monstrous finale, before the mosh-inducing “We Need a Gimmick” plays in an apparent need to win the hearts of the human race. Those crafty goblins, always planning on trying to take over the Earth! The same theme is conveyed in “Full Body Xplosion”, another joyful listen and another pump of filth going into your skull. Hell, they even managed to get the king of partying, Andrew WK, to feature on the aptly titled “Let’s Get Fucked”, a clusterfuck of music brutality to the senses, with Mr. WK calling for what he does best – party. As “Mood Swing” passes by like musical bipolar, almost unable to find its footing within the album, the album comes to a halt with “Nekrogoblikon”, a full on guitar crunching finale.

Compared to the past two albums, which were often criticized for vocal inconsistencies and the band just being a joke, this album is sure to silence those who thought that. The vocals are consistent, a firm blend between growling and cleans, and the fantastic blend of musical technicality. Sometimes, we need a bit of filth in our lives so our bodies can improve our immune system so make sure that filth doesn’t happen again. With Nekrogoblikon, they’ve created enough filth to make our bodies not try to expel what they’ve created, rather make our bodies crave more and more dirt from the undergrowth of the goblin kingdom.
