What do you get when you combine transcendental elevator music with blazing yet unrefined metal riffs? Temporal, the newest and possibly final release from the San Francisco, California based band ISIS. If ebb and flow avant-garde metal is what does it for you then this release will be right up your alley. If TOOL ( Kings of Heavy Metal repetition ) and DREAM THEATER ( Masters of the long song) were to have a child you can bet it would be named ISIS. Unlike the previous five release from the band,Temporal is filled with a collection of B-Sides, rarities and videos that will leave any ISIS fan stoked.
Aaron Turner ( Vocalist and guitarist ) has stated that, “Each release has its own unique theme.” This release is no different. ISIS seems to want to take you on a journey, dancing through the catacombs of your mind with a undefinable brilliance that only a thinking metal head can appreciate.
Temporal starts out with the throaty drones of “Threshold of Transformation.” From there it leads you gently into the sweet goodnight of “Ghost Key” only to build to a massive assault of your senses. After nearly ripping your head off it drops you off and lets you rest a bit during “Wills Dissolve”, but only to get you ready for more of the same from “Carry”, “Streetcleaner” ( A Godflesh cover), “Hand of Doom” ( A Black Sabbath cover) and the rest of the album’s 14 total songs spreading over two discs. If you STILL aren’t satisfied, you will be after the five music videos on the accompanying DVD.
Call it Metal Art or Progressive Metal. Whatever. There is a reason that ISIS won “Best Underground Metal” act at the 2009 Golden God’s Awards ceremony.
