Album Review: Devour the Day’s debut album, Time & Pressure
By Cassie Carlson
Everyone at RockRevolt™Magazine is pumped up for the release of Devour the Day’s debut album, Time & Pressure, premiering today through Fat Lady Music. Branching out from Egypt Central, Blake Allison and Joey ‘Chicago’ Walser have managed to bridge the gap between the conclusion of Egypt Central, to the bright, new future of Devour the Day. This dynamic duo has put in a first-rate effort perfecting this record from beginning to end. From co-producing, writing and fulfilling every role musically, these guys are the driving force behind what the music industry should be more composed of: great musician’s producing quality music.
The majority of the 11 tracks on Time & Pressure were written in the comfort of Joey’s own home in Little Rock, Arkansas. Later these demos were perfected in Nashville at The Sound Kitchen, where the final touches would be placed on this rhythmically driven record. The first single, “Good Man”, is a very emotional, therapeutic song; for a debut song especially. The lyrics come from a place of humility, and help the listener relate to the band on a more down-to-earth level.
In my recent interview with Joey, he was very open with the meaning behind ‘Good Man’.
“I literally was on my knees, crying out to anyone who would listen, even if it wasn’t necessarily God. When you’re in a place like that, you question what you’ve done in life to bring such negative karma on.”
With that being said, I think it is safe to assume that this album holds nothing back, and shows the true colors of these very talented,
authentic musicians. The track “Blackout” is one of the many highlights of this album. Not only does it have a catchy chorus, but the words have an impact rather than just being easy to sing. This song brings to light what the ‘American dream’ is, and what we take advantage of on a daily basis. It allows us to analyze our behavior, to take a step out of ourselves and see how oblivious we are to the world around us. Even though these guys may be classified as ‘rock stars’, they act the furthest from a typical musician in the industry. They are self aware, and ready to ‘shut the machine down’ when it comes to blending in. Basically this song’s message is to never let chances pass you by because you’re too busy coloring inside the lines. Log off Facebook, turn your cell phone off, and wake up to view the sights around you! Other stand out tracks include; ‘Respect, ‘You and Not Me’, and ‘Move On’. Every minute of this album has crisp sounding guitars, harmonious vocals with catchy vocal patterns as well, and drums tight enough to bounce a dime off of.
Time & Pressure is Devour the Day’s chance to prove they can continue on strong on their own. Rolling the dice like this happens often, yet doesn’t always end well. But with dedicated musicians such as Blake and Joey, there is no failure in sight. Devour the Day knows who they are, and have their focus in the right spot. The blood, sweat, and tears behind this album are undeniably real, so if you’re a fan of passion-filled, genuine music then pick this record up today!
