The symphonic-metal band, Visions of Atlantis, have returned with their new EP, Old Routes – New Waters, a rendition of re-mastered songs from previous albums, combined into one solid album. With Thomas Caser – the only founding member that still remains, amongst new vocal duo Clémentine Delauney and Siegfried Samer, as well as previous veterans Chris Kamper, Werner Fiedler, and Mike Koren, the band is back to revive the sound of their first three albums, whilst creating a sound better than ever before.
Opening track, “Lovebearing Storm”, features the same instrumental detail that the original did, but the duo vocals change as Samer’s voice is deeper in this rendition then when the song was recorded seven years ago, however keeping the operatic-metal feel with Delauney’s vocals complimenting this upbeat rock tune. “Lost” holds a more inclusive, stronger instrumental feel, with the same vocal pattern as before, also more strongly heard. “Winternight” holds a stronger vocal key and louder instrumental tune, and in my opinion, is the most heartfelt of the EP. Next is “Seven Seas”, which is almost exactly similar to the previous version, only with deeper male vocals and more of a progressive-rock vibe. Closing out the EP, is one of the most popular songs, “Last Shut Of Your Eyes”, featuring a beautiful piano and electric guitar melody, loud and clear in the beginning, which progresses to a hard-rock instrumental piece that reminds fans of the older version. Overall, the album brings on new aspects that improve the band’s sound, also giving fans a taste of what this band is capable of and, hopefully, what’s to come. Vocally, Delauney reminds me of Amy Lee of Evanescence with her mezzo-soprano key, but the band holds a more orchestral-metal ambiance.
