MESSER, a band whose personality is culminated simply with their motto beginning at “rock that meets individuality with a side of kick your ass!” With that statement alone, the band deserves three minutes of your time to scroll down, and click the YouTube link to their video “Simple Man.” Hell, give it a listen as you read on. Hailing from Dallas, Texas the band’s inception began in 2009. The band’s lineup consists of a combination of musical veteran band members who have played in various known bands, such as lead guitarist Javier Contreras who used to play for the Jagermeister sponsored band Mudflap. Kenn Youngar, drummer of Messer had previously spent SEVEN years with his band Strangleweed. MESSER‘s bassist Maddox formed a band called Forever Sunday in 2004 along with Chris “6 Gauge” Kummer known from the “Rock Of Love” VH1 reality television spinoff “Daisy Of Love.” Maddox’s seven year stint with Forever Sunday led to him acquire the experience of opening for established acts such as Disturbed, Vanilla Ice, Fuel, and 2 Live Crew. Finally rounding out the tip of the talent, veteran frontman Dereak Messer formed a band in the late 90’s called July Alley which caught the ear of Nick Terzo from Columbia Records who also had signed a little known band by the name of Alice In Chains. After July Alley came to an end, Dereak being no stranger to achievement, as well as the brushing of shoulders with fame in the industry was then offered to sing for Alice In Chains during Layne Stayleys stint in rehab, and also had the honor of being approached to sing for Slash’s Snakepit. If that wasn’t enough, legendary slain guitar player Dimebag Darrel approached Dereak to front the project he at the time was putting together called “Damageplan.” After all was said and done, these four members have found their indefinite home within MESSER.

MESSER is best described as a unique take of a classic southern rock band, kissing within the boundaries of heavy metal, while holding a highly Texas twist and flavor that has helped to launch established acts such as HELLYEAH, and Drowning Pool into stardom. The band is proudly heavily reliant on their catchy hooks, and highly energetic anthems. I can imagine with eyes closed being among the crowd at a local club show watching this band play, and seeing the crowd chanting their best written lines. Their song “Whisky” for instance I imagine to be a fun crowd chanting track about as you might’ve guessed it to be, drinking “Whisky.” With lyrical lines within the song such as “You can’t beat it, it’s the one thing that gets me high.” Or “When I drink it I feel alright” coupled with the fast paced intensity of the song, it’s easy to imagine a crowd full of people with whisky shots in hand, dancing and rocking out vs. carefully managing to keep a percentage of the beverage within the shot glass. MESSER is that kind of band. The band has the right flare to move people out of their seats and up into the crowd, and that is both uncommonly rare in this day and age, and intensely exciting.
Both recent favorites such as “Simple Man” and “Whisky” were produced by Chad Gendason, and mixed by veteran mixer Jim “Jimbo” Barton. To make the sense of “veteran” stand out a bit further Barton is best known for mixing Metallica, Slipknot, and Eric Clapton to name just a few. It’s no wonder why these MESSER tracks stand out with quality. Currently these songs are being heavily rotated within multiple terrestrial radio stations. Other highlights the band have experienced have been winning the 2009 House Of Blues Talent Showcase, and beyond that placing at a highly respectable 2nd place among 100 international bands for the “Open for KISS” competition. Not to mention the band has been the main support for many, many established acts over the course of their career.

With MESSER already having experience of touring on multiple national tours, garnering the sightlines of the of music industry top dogs, 2013 and beyond is looking to be huge for the band. MESSER has set their focus on playing as many shows as possible, and with their new vinyl in hand featuring songs such as “Simple Man,” and “Whisky” the band looks to be traveling the right path, as the next time you see them will be at a venue near you!
