testing, testing.
I swear I submitted a comment but it’s not here yet. Do comments need to be approved first or did I not actually submit my comment?
testing that with this post.
My favorite album by Otep is the first one I heard: Smash the Control Machine. Otep is not only my artistic inspiration, but also an amazing teacher who feeds my mind with her broad vocabulary and allusions. From the beginning of the album to the end, she is teaching me something new and inspiring me.
A few of the songs like “Rise, Rebel, Resist,” “Oh, So Surreal,” and “Smash the Control Machine” are very powerful and filled with references to issues with religion, politics, and the media that have helped to broaden my views on many current issues.
Her songs “Run for Cover” and “Unveiled” have encouraged me to learn more about different deities such as Osiris and Krishna and Isis and Ishtar and Hecate and Kali and Kronos in search of why Otep would choose these gods and goddesses to mention in her songs.
Otep’s song “Ur a Wmn Now” utilizes the full power of music by painting a picture that pulls me into a different time or place where women aren’t treated fairly. The somber tone of the music makes me feel very sad and sympathetic to the struggles of the person in the song.
I feel like I could go on and on talking about Otep. I am absolutely hypnotized by their works and am impatiently biding my time until January 22nd gets here and I can listen to Hydra.
Thank you for sharing that Miranda. You will loooooooove this new album!
Well, first and foremost, Otep saved my life more than once. I owe her every fiber of my being, because without her I would not be here today. I’ve been through everything, and I always get through it through Otep. She’s like the mother I don’t have. The way she writes, and thinks is just absolutely astonishing. There could never be one like her, she is definitely one of a kind.
My favorite album would have to be House of Secrets, because I feel that is where I’m living currently. You can look at a person from the exterior, and not know what kind of trauma and tragedy goes on in their day to day lives. I live in a violet, very hostile place, and I identify very well with this album. Listening to it makes me feel understood, and takes me to a safe place where I don’t have to hide and cower in my room for fear of being abused. It’s a comforting place where I can vanquish and destroy my fears and unload my baggage of sadness and misfortune.
I absolutely love Otep, she’s an incredible person, and I cannot wait until Hydra comes out.

shit….why did you guys have to ask the hardest question possible? “What is the meaning of life?” would have been a hell of a lot easier.
i honestly can’t decide, so i’ll go with “sounds like armageddon” since it is a mix of all the albums and has the brutality of a live otep show. every time i play that album i’m taken back to the otep shows that i have seen and the intensity that i carry with me for days after the show. the amount of emotion, passion, and strength that flows through the room during an otep show is a surreal experience that you won’t find with any other band. Every single song she has written is truly a brilliant work of art that serves an important purpose (something you rarely see now a days). her music is an infectious disease that grows in the listeners heart until it consumes it, but unlike a disease, it works to give the person more strength in all realms of their lives. it’s a disease i’d want to catch any day over bieber fever.
Every album Otep has created is amazing. But the one album that changed my life, and got me hooked to her music, and her as well, has to be “The Ascension.” That album changed my mind. It got me thinking so much, it made me discover feelings that I’ve never felt before. It inspired me to write, and use my imagination in such a different way, a good way. After listening to this album, I got taken away by her words, and her screaming. I have to admit that at first, her music freaked me out. I thought it was just scary, but listening to her words made me see past that. This album was just nothing I have ever heard before. The power of her voice, painted so many pictures in my head, and made me feel as if I was part of her life. It took me to a completely different world. Ahh!
Has to be ‘House of Secrets’. The title track still gives me chills to this day. Absolute brutality sandwiched between a creepy intro/outro. Love it!
For me it has to be House Of Secrets. The dark, foreboding intro that is “Requiem” perfectly sets the stage for Otep’s sophomore effort. The band then charges forth with “Warhead” and doesn’t let up. “Nein” “Sepsis” and “Buried Alive” are all standout tracks. Joey Jordison’s drum work adds a whole new element to the album.
It has to be The Ascension for me - I was first turned onto Otep by Confrontation, and then blown away by Ghostflowers which still remains my favourite song of theirs to date. Dripping with angst and creativity, it reeks of of brilliance and hints of epic things to come.
I love all the OTEP albums, but my favorite is probably The Ascension because the video for “Ghostflowers” got me into it, and I went right out and bought all the albums to that date, and have been a follower ever since. Have seen OTEP in concert a couple times and I loved them both! As a musician myself, I love the lyrical content that’s dealt with and can’t wait till Hydra hits the shelves!
I am so excited to hear HYDRA.
Sevas Tra (aka Art Saves) is by far my favorite album. It was the first I’d heard of Otep and I was hooked immediately.
“Jonestown Tea”, the last song on the album, is by far my favorite Otep song of all time. It is vivid, emotional and brutal. Knowing that this song has helped so many people change their lives (especially those two girls in Florida who played this song for their mom to explain they were being abused), knowing they aren’t alone in some of the torture life can deal makes this album especially dear to me.
As an artist and a youth mentor, I admire the strength and courage it took to record this and I appreciate the message in her music and the butterfly effect it has caused for the “tribe.”
Art truly Saves.
My favorite album is ATIVIST because all the songs flow so well together. From “Ativist Animus” to “Atom to Adam” all the way through the Doors remake of “Not To Touch The Earth”. I would love to win this package.
I am so excited about HYDRA. I read your review on the site and that just made the anticipation growing.
It’s hard to pick my favourite OTEP album, since I love all of them, but I think that her magnum opus is SMASH THE CONTROL MACHINE. It contains the alchemy of her first album (since it was recorded with the original members) summed with her experiences and strong view on life.
I can’t wait for HYDRA!
