Many bands are defined by their front-man, to the degree that a replacement is considered impossible, but then there are vocalists that are a force unto themselves and define the sound in any band they connect with; Chuck Mosley was one of the latter. His time with mega-Alt-rock band Faith No More defines their early sound, with “We Care A Lot” being both a fan favorite and a distinct contrast to their later sound, as did his touring years with Bad Brains, and he brought that same enigmatic energy to his contributions on Primitive Race’s Soul Pretender. Originally an Industrial super group with an incredible cast of legendary characters a la PIG, the project’s sophomore album is a striking departure into post-grunge, which fit the legendary vocalists personality and vocal style perfectly.
“When I listened to the music, ideas just came pouring out,” Mosley had previously stated. “I couldn’t say no to doing the record. When we completed the first few tracks, I found myself wishing I had written them. Not just the lyrics…just good heavy riffs and grooves really sucked me in. The melodies and words came super easy with this music. Even though it’s a whole different vibe it brought out a side of me I haven’t experienced since writing with Faith No More.”
Tragically, Mosley died 6 days following the album release, but the band is keeping attention on the release in honor of Chuck’s memory with a lyric video for the quintessentially Chuck Mosley track “Cranial Matter”.
“‘Cranial Matter’ is probably my favorite song on the album because it was a classic example of Chuck doing what he did best; it was punk rock that ear worms the listener to singing along without knowing the words.” – Chris Kniker (Founding Member)
