If you’re one of those uniquely open minded alternative rock fans, then you should be aware of Brooklyn based trio Karabas Barabas. If you’re not aware, but particularly open minded, then here’s your introduction. Though largely draped in a secretive cloak–no one knows for sure exactly who these wild men even are, aside from their unique sound and vague yet politically pointed lyrics–they’ve come to carve out a special spot in the alternative, indie rock world. Their debut LP, Return of the Sexy Demon, was equal parts frenetic Mr. Bungle nonsense and Primus at their most experimental (think maybe even more into Les’s Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains era). But this isn’t just some knock off band riding the coattails of 90s alt-rock, these guys have some serious instrumental chops, and while it’s easy to dismiss their strange lyrics as weird for the sake of weird, there’s actually a very serious point being made here, at least most of the time. After Sexy Demon, the group went underground again, mainly just playing local shows, but then re-emerged in October ’17 with a flurry of tracks introducing their sophomore album, Sex with the Devil. Still experimental, still off kilter and discordant, the sound is starting to polish up; though it’s a highly diverse 10 track LP, there’s a stronger sense of continuity and clear growth in the sound and direction. This one is still definitely going to appeal to fans of Bungle and Primus, but there’s a serious Frank Zappa and Iggy Pop edge at work. Picking a favorite track isn’t easy, though we’re partial to the trippy and jarring instrumentation in “Lahey” and the short but catchy, ear worm, “Alcohol“.

“As the cheese doodle and cheat throws tiny Tim’s crutch into the fire to satisfy the will of the dark lord, Satan’s radioactive spawn is buried deep within the cooshie tooshie of the great Russian Czar by none other than the great beast himself Alex Jones.” – Karabas Barabas
