With an hint of old school rock n roll, a touch of Danzig and just a pinch of Megadeth come Melbourne’s Lace & Whiskey. After tearing up stages in both rural and urban Victoria their debut EP Method in the Madness is here. Method in the madness is a straight dose of no bullshit rock n roll, it may not be the greatest recording but when rock n roll has balls this big, what does it matter?
From the opening scream of Robert Puglisi’s guitar on “Heartbreaker” to the closing Four Horsemen style riffs of “Sister of Destruction” the essence of rock n roll comes oozing from your speakers.
I heard you like guitar solos? Well these boys have got em! Listen to the sweet shredding on “Get Some” and tell me you arent more than mildly impressed! “Xvii” now with a cleverly masked title like that you’re sue for some dirty fun here, but that comes later on “She’s got Potential”. “Xvii” or “16” is more of a pick yourself up, it ain’t so bad kinda song. The kinda song a person needs when you’ve had that kind of shitty day where nothin is right. This is Lace & Whiskey’s answer to Eye of the Tiger.
So here we go, the dirtiest song on the record. “She’s Got Potential”. Do I need to explain this one? I mean, read that title! You know what they’re gonna say! She certainly does have potential, and this song has the potential to kick your ass!!
If you’re ever in the Melbourne pub scene and have a chance of caching these boys live, you gotta do it! Not for me, not for your mother but for rock n roll and also Declan McGiness’s bass playing and immaculate hair, which honestly I felt was a little under represented on the EP, the bass playing not the hair. Live, Declan is a master of finger work, his bass tapping skills are unmatched from what I have seen in this town. I’ve seen a lot things, I’ve seen a man eat his own head, but I ain’t never seen a bass player like Delan live.
Howling at the front like a lonely siren is Pat Lahn, a big voice in a small package. His voice is raw, his voice is sharp, his voice is the voice of a man who knows his band and knows them well. Behind the kit we have Mr. Paul “sexual pervert” Healey. As with Declans’ bass playing his true ability doesn’t shine through on the recording which is a shame.
So despite some recording issues, this is a solid effort from a young and promising Melbourne rock n roll act with blisteringly white hot guitar solos, some killer grooves, howlin vocals and a slightly under-represented rhythm section.
