Kill The Flaw is the band’s 11th studio album which released on October 2nd via 7Bros. Records with ADA/Warner Brothers Distribution. Sevendust is comprised of iconic vocalist Lajon Witherspoon, the dual-guitar attack of John Connolly and Clint Lowery, and the driving rhythm section of Vince Hornsby on bass and Morgan Rose on drums. Kill The Flaw was self-produced by Sevendust and recorded at Architekt Music in Butler, New Jersey with engineer/mixer Mike Ferretti.
It’s tough to give an un-biased album review for a band I like as much as Sevendust. Having met and hung out with them on many occasions, I can wholeheartedly say without question that they are the epitome of a class act, down to earth rock band! And if you’ve seen them live, I don’t have to tell you how incredible that is. If you haven’t seen them live, check out their tour calendar and GO!! You’re welcome!
Kill the Flaw is some of their best work to date and I’d put it right on par with Animosity or Home! The album kicks off with first single “Thank You” – which is a quintessential Sevendust track; meaning a cool intro, followed by a nice heavy dose of double bass and super heavy guitar work, melodic vocals, screaming vocals and a catchy chorus that will have you singing “So thanks for coming around, and pushing my head back to the ground” all week!
To quote front man Lajon Witherspoon, “We took some time off from the heavy side of SEVENDUST, and when it came time to record some new music, Clint, John, Vinnie, Morgan and I put everything we had in to what became ‘Kill The Flaw.’” And it shows with tracks like “Cease And Desist,” “Not Today” and title track “Kill the Flaw,” which all display growth as a band while keeping the signature Sevendust sound that us fans have grown to love over their storied career. If that is what they had to say about it, then it has to be good! This album will satisfy all diehard Sevendust hooligans and will entice those who have never heard them before to drop the crap they’ve been listening to, crawl out from under a rock they’ve been living under, and plug in. Standout tracks for Kill the Flaw that will lure in the masses are “Torched” and “Cease & Desist”…
Out of the gate, “Cease and Desist” lures you in with an electronic intro and tranquil vocals from maestro Lajon Witherspoon. But just as you are beginning to believe this is going to be laid back song, LJ explodes into the chorus to give this track that classic Sevendust sound. This song gives all fans what they are looking for in an amazing alternative rock song by switching between the melodic and explosive to keep listeners drawn to this addictive addition to Kill the Flaw. Following “Cease and Desist”, “Not Today” draws you in with hypnotic sounds, bringing you once again to a vocal explosion from Lajon. He then leads you into the chorus that you will love to sing along with just as much as ‘Thank You.”
The guitar duo of John Connolly and Clint Lowery absolutely dominate. For forty six minutes they dial up the perfect mixture of chug and melody. From the sugary leads in “Chop” to the thrashy, dissonant powerchord pounding of “Kill the Flaw” they lead a tag-team assault that is downright addictive. I can see my man Vinny with a backwards hat on, bass hanging down at his knees, galloping those bass lines in ‘Silly Beast’ and of course Morgan pounding away on his kit to ‘Torched.’ Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic gave the album three and a half out of five stars, describing it as “Returning to their heavy basics” and I couldn’t agree more. Except for the rating of course, 3.5 stars is a bit low in my opinion!
Look, at the end of the day, it’s a classic Sevendust album that delivers everything you would expect out of a Sevendust record. And I personally can’t wait to see these songs live. The circle pits are gonna be epic!!
