ALBUM REVIEW: ANCHOR & BRAILLE – TENSION

Anberlin front man, Stephen Christian, has just released another solo album using his music alias, Anchor & Braille. This is his fourth solo album since the singer and song writer released his 2009 solo debut, Felt. The new album, Tension, follows suit to his previous music and offers something distant from what Anberlin fans may be familiar with.

Tension definitely delivers a new sound. Christian has been quoted saying his solo albums are created with an intentional, musical contrast from his work with Anberlin. His solo career began with a strong alternative rock sound that slowly morphed into an Indie and pop style. The singer’s latest record, Tension, undoubtedly bares the sound of classic pop music.

Starting from the first song there is a recognizable movie soundtrack vibe. The moment I pushed play I felt like I should be on the dancefloor in a classic John Hughes film. Christian belts out the buttery, smooth harmonies making up for the lack of intensity normally delivered by Anberlin. The song, “Madness,” brings a slight boost of energy without breaking the overall aesthetic of his latest compilation.

Tension is a great album if you’re looking for something more in the easy listening category that mirrors Christian’s past solo performances. Don’t expect the powerful guitar notes or catchy chorus you think you may know from Anberlin. It’s a completely different experience that’s for sure. If you’re looking for something to mix up your current stash this is definitely it!
