AN INTERVIEW WITH NICK JOST

                                                                                   by Alice Roques

ockrevolt loves to bask in the glow of music of all types, and Baroness is that metal adventure that we enjoy
plugging into and enveloping ourselves in. With the release of their latest album, Gold & Grey, an album that
demonstrates true musicianship and artistry, expanding and exploring new boundaries of musical and vocal
Rharmonies, we at RockRevolt flocked to the opportunity to speak with the band that has been a mainstay on our
eardrums for the last decade and a half. We were tickled purple to speak with Nick Jost, bassist of the prolific and
        profound, Baroness.

Tell me about Gold & Grey. Silver lining for you. I’ve we found the sequence. We
What was your part in that listened to it a couple of times knew we wanted to have air,
album? and I seems like there’s -- I we knew we needed a break
Yeah contributing like parts wasn’t sure if the stylistic -- from the more punishing songs
of songs definitely. Definitely there were some songs that that are on the record but we
contributed the writing of felt I guess fuzzier than others did not know how to achieve
the record and I mean it’s and I wasn’t sure what was that and have that flow. So
a collaborative process so causing that if it was a style or that was a long week and half
my role in it was sitting in a intentional. of back and forth of trying
basement for a year and half Right. Yeah it’s definitely to find out how these songs
together with three members intentional. That’s part of actually work together and
and working out how this thing working with Dave I think. once we stumbled upon this,
is going to sound in plain base Because that’s part of Dave’s it’s like yeah, this is it.
of course. sound in a lot of the records
he does and I think translated
to our music, it just sounds Was it a cold week in the
Of course. I mean that’s part insane. Because there’s not a basement or was it a warm
of it you know. So locked in a lot of space in the music we week in the basement for
basement, is that the typical play. It’s like a heavily rift song that?
writing style for Baroness? and a high energy drum part. That was a medium. That was
Yeah, for the last six years at But fuzz on that and it sounds a week at my house. Getting
least. John and Gina live in like what the hell is going on for emails for that one.
Philadelphia. Seb and I live some of these songs you know.
in New York. We come down So yeah I think that’s just part
BAR- colder in the basement and kind of tapered off so I wasn’t connected to?
of working with Dave and his Oh! There you go. A more
to Phily about half the week
 AN INTERVIEW WITH
choices are in that world. He comfortable week it sounds
            and spend about 12 hours
            a day. If it’s cold outside, it’s
likes comfy drums and he’s like. Very good. Which song
really good at making those on the album do you feel most
                                                 kind of sounds work together.
if it’s hot outside, it’s usually
            hotter in the basement. So
In a lot of ways already gone
                                                                                      because I think it’s something
yeah we have some writing When I was listening to it, it
                                                                                      that would only come out
sessions where we’re wearing kind of got really big in the
of the four of us you know. I
like ski suits and winter gloves middle of the record then it
            working out ideas.
                                                                                      definitely feel connected to
ONESS But I imagine that would make purposeful in that nature. because that’s the name of
                                                                                      Emmett - Radiating Light
                                             sure if the sequencing was
my nephew so I wrote that for
        your bass playing a little
                                                 Well, the sequencing for me
-- not necessarily for him but
        difficult.
makes it an album. Before we
kind of like with him over at
It’s not easy. I mean I can play
                                                 discovered that sequence, it
was kind of a thing where it
with gloves on at this point so
                                                                                      Christmas time playing a piece
            that’s I guess a skill that came
of guitar while my family is
felt like a collection of songs.
                                                                                      hanging out with him. That
                                                 Because there’s this middle
            out of it.
one definitely has a place in
valley in the record that we
                                                                                      my heart.
didn’t know how to utilise until
