INTERVIEW: CHRYSALIDE

ChrysalideEver wonder what it would sound like if Satan was French and he started a digital hardcore/industrial act ?

Now that’s a statement in a band bio that will catch just about everyone’s attention. The industrial trio Chrysalide did just that and the more I investigated, the more intrigued I became with the band. Their latest album Personal Revolution is a twisted and brilliant mix of pulsating bass, aggression, electronic drums and old school industrial influences that is as equally compelling as it is addictive. The band, heralding from Strasbourg, France, consists of brothers Arco and Syco Trauma and Yoann Amnesy. Are you bored and burnout with the pre-programmed crap that keeps getting forced down your throat by the powers that be? Well, you may just want to check these guys out and see what you have been missing. You can thank us later!

I’m a music nerd and I always want to know if there’s a story behind the band’s name? What’s the story with your name or is there one?

Arco Trauma: Yes there is and, day after day, it has more meaning for us. It is a metaphore about the transition state. It is what this world inspires of us most of the time, with its own potential and its own fail.

Syco Trauma: The metaphor of the metamorphosis is probably the best image we could choose to describe our band and we chose to keep the word in French to appear a bit exotic and romantic.

Every hero or villain has an origin, so can you tell me how the three of you created the band?

Arco: Syco and I are brothers and Yoann has been a very good friend of ours for many years and we all share the same deep passion for music. There was also this feeling that we really want to create our own music and make it euphoric as possible; it’s as simple as that.

Syco: There is a real alchemy between the three of us and we are very close. We are gathered by common feelings about life and the world. We’re three companions on the same road between hope and melancholy.

The new album Personal Revolution has been out for just a little over a month. What’s the feedback been on it?

Arco: It’s been pretty good for the moment. We feel support from a lot of countries and a lot of different kinds of scenes, so it motivates us a lot to make it bigger. Now, we’re working on a better live performance and touring more.

Syco: We waited many long months to share this album with our audience, so the last few weeks have been so exciting with all the feedback, reviews, interviews and interactions with fans.

Who did you work with as far as a producer goes and why?

Arco: Artistically, we made it by ourselves including the composition, recording, mixing, mastering and artwork in my studio in Strasbourg. We were completely free to make what we really wanted. We didn’t feel any pressure at all with the process and it was important for us because we respect each other.

I saw in an article where your sound was described as “21st Century Industrial Music.” Do you think that’s a fair description? How would you describe it?

Arco: I think so, but I admit it is a bit pretentious, but I take it as a wink. I think it describes well the way we try to make it fresh, both musically and lyrically. We try to mix so many kinds of influences in, but we don’t want to make a nostalgic music; that’s not our point.

Syco: I don’t know what industrial really means in 2014, but we definitely do have a sound for the 21st century. There have been some reviewers who have called us the “new Skinny Puppy.” Actually, all the namings express something fresh and something new. I guess we are like a new branch of that tree.

Is there any chance of hearing this new music live here in the U.S.?

Arco: We hope so because we would love to play in the USA and we’re actually working on it.

Syco: It’s on our plans, so yes, but probably in the second half of 2015.

Have you guys played live in the U.S. before? If so, what were your thoughts of the reaction from the U.S. audience?

Arco: No, not yet, but we did make a Canadian tour right near the border and it was fucking cool. The audience and organizers were very warm and friendly to us. I really hope a big U.S. tour will happen soon.

What does the future hold in store for Chrysalide?

Arco: Right now, we are actually working on some videoclips, so please keep in touch with us on those.

Syco: Yes, the first video clip is arriving very soon and we will begin work again on the live show; personal revolution is an endless road my friend.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to answers my questions. Do you have any closing words for your fans?

Arco: Keep calm and I hope to see you all very soon on tour!

Syco: Think for yourself and stay true!  Thank you very much for all your support.
