———————————-

It’s been a long life, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult; they’ve been entertaining and offending with their infectious beats since 1987.  Never one to be constrained by their last album, TKK has once again spun the car around with the release of their new album Spooky Tricks.  While their last album of new tunes, 2009’s Death Threat was a return to their darker, heavier themes—both musically and lyrically, Spooky Tricks is a horse of a somewhat different color.

“The Way We Live Now,” “Sex Witch,” and “Room on the Moon” have a direct lifeline to some of their earliest albums—with the dark and vampy vibe that so many TKK fans love.  Here are the distorted guitars and menace, but sharpened with some sophisticated backing melodies and a solid underpinning of sinister beats.  “Room on the Moon’s” growling vocals sound exactly like something whispered in your ear on a crowded dance floor—promise, menace and intrigue wrapped up in a sleazy, sexy rhythm.  For my money, “Sex Witch” is one of the best tracks on the album, and will be the biggest hit with more seasoned TKK fans.

The title track has a generous helping of horror-movie sensibilities and dark distortion mixed with a spacy sci-fi sound that feels like a nod to 80’s dance music.   “Monti Karlo” is my personal favorite on the album—a patented disco beat with the soaring horns opens the track, and the whole song dares you to stay seated while you listen.  Double dog dares you.  If you can resist the danceable charms of “Monti Karlo,” your powers will not last against “Diamonde Doll”.  The smooth, bouncy boom-chicka-wow factor of this track is a polished, infectious call to carpe diem and get your booty shaking.

All in all, you can’t pin down My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, and that is what has kept them going, like some sort of irreverent, sexy, grinding, battery-operated bunny for nearly three decades, and will for years to come. I give them a battery-operated set of 3.5 skulls! WHIRRRR!!!
