On a brisk May morning there was a buzz around the city and the surrounding suburbs, it was RockFest day, the biggest one-day music festival in America.
On the drive to Liberty Memorial I could tell which cars that I was passing by that were headed to the same location as me. As I found my way towards the entrance, a full two and a half hours ahead of the gates opening, a line was already formed and at least a good 300 yards long. As I made my way through the throngs of people, you could tell it was going to be a good day.
Kicking off the day at noon was The Veer Union, and after that there was no looking back. It was 12 hours of non-stop, heart pounding Rock n’ Roll. Old favorites like Jackyl and Sevendust got the crowd going while others had their first chance at experiencing bands like, Like A Storm and Ghost.
This was the first RockFest I had been to in a long time, the last one I was at was the old Sandstone, so it’s been awhile. Years past I always heard stories of MudFest and the ground littered in turkey legs, but not this year, the sun was out all day and the crowd seemed to be just sitting back and taking in the glorious weather coupled with the day of excellent music. To paraphrase one of the photographers that was on hand “it seems way less frat boyish this year,” and that seemed to be the general consciences throughout the day.
As the sun started to set on the day and the chill returned in the air, Hellyeah and Disturbed closed out their respective stages and put a bow on what was another successful Rockfest. Make sure to check out all of the killer photos that were captured throughout the day.
